What lofts are on your wedges?

I'm looking at buying new wedges. I can't decide on two or three wedges. Currently I've got:

PW 44
AW 50
SW 56

Im not that convinced I need THREE (on top of a PW) as 4 degrees (48,52,56 seemed too close) but then again the gapping of 6 degrees is a little excessive at times, especially from PW to AW. Any feedback welcome, especially if it includes bounce! Cheers!

Depends on how you are looking to play the shots on each wedge and the top of your bag
Etc

My PW is 46

I have 50, 54 and 58

6 degrees gap for me would be just too much

I bought new irons last year and discovered the pitching wedge is 41°. So I went back a couple of months later and added the 'AW' as well, which is 46°. Basically my irons are numbered one down from what they should be. Aside from them I have a 50, a 56 and a 60. The 60 is a SureOut I use in bunkers, I think I'll replace the other two this year, but possibly swap the 56 for a 54 that I'd get more use out of.

Mine are 45, 50, 56 & 60. I've been playing through the winter with just the 45º (PW in the set) and the 56º and apart from a few times where I've missed my 50º for full shots I've really not noticed that much difference. I'm very comfortable opening the face, or using less than a full swing etc, so having fewer full shots wouldn't really bother me.

I've been thinking (for probably 18 months at least) about going to 45, 52 & 58 and giving myself room for another club at the top end of the bag. Between my driver and 4 iron I've got 3 & 5 woods, a 3 hybrid and a 3 iron. 3 from the 4 rather than 2 would, I think, offer me more options - especially the 3 iron in summer etc.

I have a Mizuno Mp20 HMB 45° PW, and then 3 Ping Glide Forged wedges, 50° GW, 56° SW, bent to 55° and 60° LW, all with same shafts as my irons. Can't remember the bounce, but I think 6 in GW and SW and 8 for the LW or something like that. I used to have a SW with 14° bounce (which I won) and the fitter said it was no wonder I was terrible out of bunkers (although I'm still pretty bad!).
5° is about right for me; I really wouldn't wanted to have gone more.

8 is 44
9 is 49
10 is 54

I usually add a standard 58 SW from another similar set when playing with these.

"Nothing new under the sun" one might say, as most folks have such a similar set up with clubs that are 60 years newer.

6° gaps are good for most hanidcap golfer. There was a trend of going for loads of wedges, but that was counterproductive aping of the pros. It suits them with long drives, hitting so many wedges to greens, and having bigger distance gaps between clubs of a give loft gap. So if you hit it 300, then another wedge and 4-5 gaps probably worthwhile. And a 60. But 5 wedges harms the average golfer, who needs more hybrids and fairway woods at the long end, as that is what he will be playing to the green frequently. I have 44, 50, 56 too.

I think either 4 or 6 degrees gaps are perfectly playable once you’ve gotten used to it. The more important question is do you need an extra club at the long end of your bag.

I played 50, 54, 60 for years but was always uncomfortable with shots that I didn’t have a club for a long way from the green. I find it far easier to take 10 yards off a wedge than I do a 3 wood so last year I finally switched to 52 and 58 (PW from set is 47).
It took a while to get used to because my favourite club to fudge distances with was my 54 but I’m used to them now and the extra long club is far more useful to me.

Bounce I think is subjective and personal preference, not something that anyone can say what is best for you. Some will say have a mixture but I know from experience that I don’t get on with low bounce wedges - as sexy as it is to open up a 60/04 and send the ball whizzing past your nose I am just as likely to knife it through the car park 😳

Without going to my bag to check I think mine are 52/12 and 58/10.

I’ve been stock PW/52/58 since 2011 but the new zx5 just that bit to strong to stick at it. My CF16’s had a 44* PW and it was fine but the new irons have left a big void between 52 & 44.

I’ve now gone PW(44), 48, 52, 58. Ok full shots the gapping is consistent of around 12-15yards but it’s about what’s right for you.

Mine are pretty much the same , iron set PW is 44 then 48,52 and 58.

I have three wedges along with my pitching wedge which is 46’, a gap wedge at 52 that I usually only really carry when playing firmer greens, a sand wedge at 56 and a lob wedge at 60 degrees.

To the OP, my advice would be keep the wedges as minimal as you feel you need. I’ve seen many carrying 3/4 wedges really confuse themselves with too many options and therefore confuse themselves.

I’ve personally only gone to 3 as there was a gapping issue. I could choke down on my stock 44* to get the distance of the 48* but it didn’t get the height and produce enough spin to bite. 3/4’s of a 48* is more consistent for me than 2/3’s of a 44* but …. for over 10years getting a low at 7 having stock plus 52/58 gave all the options I needed. I just practiced full - 3/4- 2/3 -1/2 swings regular with both and also the same but choked down an inch to alter the flight.

I don't know, but I know how far I hit them.

Here's a pic of all my wedges

CIMG0759.jpg

As has been mentioned before, too many wedges can get complicated.
To the OP I would say 46, 52 and 58.
Perfect for low, medium and high

45° i230 PW - 120 yards
50° i230 GW - 105 yards
54° SM5 -85 yards
58° SM9 - 70 yards

Full distances above but I'm more comfortable with not going 100% with a wedge, so the PW can really cover everything from 90 to 130, GW from 70 to 110 etc.
