Based on Patricks greatest recovery thread, I thought it a good balance to have a 'greatest golf meltdown' thread.

It's good to get it off your chest and for us all to have a giggle, you know the ones, the stories that make you wake up in a cold sweat at 3am:eek:

I'll start...

Qualified for my first ever club championship and was leader after the 36 hole qualifying.
The final was also 36 holes but only the top 6 players watched by the whole club on finals day  so there was me the young nooby kid and 5 others who had all won it before and were in the scratch team.

I was so nervous people commented on how white I was, I had to buy a hat in the pro shop to hide my face and to block out the rest of the club staring at me:eek:

I could hardly swing and proceeded to wildly slice and hook my way round the course- sometimes I was literally 2 fairways away from the hole we were playing...I can't remember the 18th as my brain has blocked out the numerous shanks that carded me an 11 and cocked head enquiries of 'you alright'?

Never had anything like that but there was a day I am trying to block out: May 7th 2011, Royal Ascot Golf Club, the 5th comp I had played since joining. I was level par gross standing on the 10th tee, approximately 2 hours later I was signing for a 13 over par 83!!

Dunno if this is a great meltdown but basically monthly medal through 13 holes at plus 1 after a bit of a session the night before. Stopped to relieve my bladder and the promptly dropped 10 shots over the remaining holes :( , should have drunk more liquids as I had a steaming headache and was dizzy ... Lesson learnt I carry lots of water now and since having a child my boozing is curtailed. Also the night before is early to bed after cleaning my clubs ... Yes I am that boring.
Nearly had a meltdown when I wandered off in a medal round for a slash in a bush, only to be halve way through said slash to hear my playing partner ask what he should practice to improve his swing.... One should be allowed to slash in privacy.

Shot 75/3 over gross :) - 6 under cap and 9 under Nett to CSS - on the long/hard course of 36 hole round 3/4 of Club Champs in 85* temps to go 2nd gross and nett. Shot 20 over on 'easier' course in the afternoon!

I've told mine before, here it is again if anyone is interested. I shot 2 under gross 32 on the front 9 of my home course walking to the 10th tee with out of bounds right and left is basically a lost ball. I proceeded to hit 3 balls of of bounds (my first ball was 6 inches out of bounds), with my 4th (7th off the tee) I hit the fairway then I hit the green with my 8th shot & went on to 3 putt for an 11. I ended up shooting a few over my handicap but it felt like a case of what could have been

Ive far too many to mention but have 1 in particular, playing a first medal on a course I had just joined, playing the par 5 16 with 5 shots of my HC still up my cuff and knocked 3 balls into the bundai and found none so NR'd. Played 17 and 18 like the ultimate chomper that we can all be I suppose.

So with 3 bogeys i'd have had a cut but in the end had buffer but wasnt happy.

That hole still gives me nightmares.

Easy, this one.

Medal last year standing on the 16th tee level par gross.

I'm thinking only 3 to go easy do this in level for the round.

Not a great tee shot 180 to the pin into an easterly. 2 hybrid easy enough to get on the green two puts and i'm away. far to quick on it, low and straight into one of the bunkers just over the burn that protect the green from running the ball up the green.

Balls plugged in the face, of a pott bunker, 8 hits to get out for a 12.

17th hook in the heather reload off the tee another few poor shots 8

and another 12 down the last .... 19 shots dropped on 3 holes.

still got cut but a bitter pill after playing so well on the others:(

My meltdown was early on in the round. First ever medal at Belton Park and the first 4 holes went well and playing nicely under my handicap. Standing on the 5th tee I then proceed to hook 3 balls out of bounds on the left then put 2 in the water by the green.

Still have nightmares about this now so here goes....

Playing a comp one Saturday towards end of last season and i was stood on the 15th tee 4 over gross with 15, yes 15 shots left for just 4 holes  . I hit my tee shot on 15th straight down the middle, a beauty which left me about an 8 iron into green. Hits my approach into a greenside bunker and then proceeds to go bunker to bunker in all 4 bunkers around the green and walked off with a 9! I then double bogeyed the last 3 holes and lost the comp on a playoff :( Got a cut but could of butchered my handicap that day.

Spent hours in the practice bunker the next day until i was happy it wasnt happening again.

So many to choose from.

After I took up golf I played my first medal after getting my handicap.

Picture a pretty 130 yard par 3 that involves crossing a lake with no fairway just tee, water and green, the green also slopes towards the water. No chance to go long as there is out of bounds. I hit my first into the water, no problem I thought, I will get over this time. Second into the water. I eventually put a 23 on my card when I finally got it over the lake. I then had the added embarasment of waiting for my playing partners to stop wetting themselves so they could putt out. By the time we got back to the clubhouse I was already a living legend. I even ran out of balls and had to borrow some. I also did not play another medal for at least a year and stuck to stablefords.

My second medal was equally as bad with a 17 on the card from a pot bunker. Needless to say I am now a (slightly) better golfer, my last card had nothing more than a double bogey on it.

Like Valentino said; far too many to mention. But two in recent memory are:

34 points through 15 holes with a shot on 16. Finished with 36 points.

+3 gross on 18th (SI 18) in club championship first round, playing off 10. Knocked tee shot in back bunker, 5 yards from the pin. Walked off with a 6 to finish +6 and out of the prizes.

Similar to my recovery story, this one centres on our 12th hole, which makes it odd that I didn't list it as my nemesis hole :mmm:

I'd gone out in 37 (+2) without really realising, although I knew I was hitting the ball well, until I heard one of my playing partners whisper to the other on the 10th tee "Has he just gone out in 37?" I got a little bit excited but managed to hold it together enough to par 10 and 11. 12 is a par 3, 203 yards, slightly downhill and usually playing with a cross wind from right to left. Perfect for a 3 hybrid. I stood on the tee and, from nowhere, proceeded to sclaff it into the heathery junk between the tee and the green. Found it in a horrible lie, so jabbed it out, but still not on the green. Bladed the 3rd to the back of the green and 3 putted for a 6.

From there, I finished bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, double bogey, double bogey to finish right in the buffer. One of my playing partners said to me afterwards "I was desperate for you to make a par after 12, just to steady yourself again, but it never came." Oh, what could have been :(

There's also the time I hit a great opening 3 iron down the 1st at Prestwick, and then hit three consecutive, brand-new-out-of-the-sleeve Pro V1s onto the railway line, but that was a bounce game so doesn't really count.

Too many to mention, but probably the most interesting one was being 8 down with 9 to play in a foursommes knockout. Suddenly my partner and I started playing and we couldn't do anything wrong, chipping in, sinking monster putts. On the 18th we were all square and I duffed my drive. We lost 1 down.

A few to choose from but the one that really sticks was a medal round last year. I'd been playing crap for about a year and in this round finally started to pull everything together. Was swinging great, not a care in the world.

I got to the 16th. I was something like 7 shots under my handicap at that point. It;s a long par5 with OOB up the right which I have a habit of slicing into when I get nervous. Just stepped up and nailed one right down the middle. Job done.

So middle of the fairway. Pull my most trusted club, 3w, out to knock it up short of the green. Huge slice OOB. Drop another, exact same shot. After a bit more faffing about I ended up with a 9.

Next hole, Long Par3 17th. Elevated tee. Topped my 4i into the bench about 30 yards in front and to the left. Came right back in front into the rough in front of the tee. Hit a good 5i out to just short of the green. Chipped on to 5 feet then 3 putted.

18th. SI 18. OOB up the right. Yep, cast iron guarantee. Hit my second ball right again, but it stayed in. Had about 160 into the green. Sliced my 6i OOB. Think I walked off with another 9.

Went from Golfing God to Golfing Dog. Still to this day I have no idea what or how it happened.

Far too many that have been despatched to the deepest darkest corners of my brain. One from a few years back I led clubs champs after day 1 with a 71 I think it was, been playing well and quite confident going into day 2. Stood on the 4th 6 over par for the day having had a bogey a double and a triple to start :(

6 up through 7 in a junior team game I decided to scoop up my opponents ball on the 8th green thinking he had taken 5 shots to get to 6 feet, he'd only had four so I'd just given him the hole when I missed my 3 footer for par!

I walked down the 17th fairway 1 down, then he collapsed by going double, double to give me the game 1 up!!

Big medal competition at my club, stood on the par 4 12th tee at six over while playing off 23 and walked off that hole with a 13. Never recovered and ended up shooting 26 over.

36 hole scratch comp. 1 under after 18 and leading. On the 4th hole in the 2nd 18 I managed to find a huge divot hole just off the fairway - cue the 2nd shot going off sideways and a double bogey. The round got a little rocky for a few holes but I managed to get it back to level after 15. Another divot hole off the tee on 16, not a bad one but my head just went, and another double. Bogey-ed 17 to be 3 over. Thankfully someone told me I needed a birdie on 18 to win........................................ so I threw in another double bogey and then got smashed.

That one hurt a lot because I felt I hadn't done a lot wrong...
