what does EGU mean?

English Golf Union

Apparantly if you belong to a club you have to belong to the EGU. However your yearly subs usually include that. So best to check.

This is an unusual way of doing this. Normally you pay your subs to the club and the club pays the Golf Union on your behalf. In Scotland each club golfer pays £7 to SGU I think but the Club pays. I imagine it is similar for EGU.

How much did they want?

Pretty poor job your clubs are doing then. We get a statement that breaks the club fees down into its components, one of which is the EGU affiliation. All English clubs are affiliated, usually through their county and the fees for both EGU and County are spread across the membership.

Ladies pay a higher fee to their union than men (at least in England), though this may be down to a smaller base to share the load.

Hi,

I often come in and watch, don't often post. This came up at my club in Essex. Previously, the club had been paying the affiliation fees out of annual subs. The club gets a letter each year from English and Essex Golf Unions and asks how many members it has and is billed at (this year) £11 per member. This year the club decided it was not going to cover the costs of this and has asked all the members for £11 but the majority were not happy so the club paid out of the competition fee fund. For 2009 season it is now shown as part of the total for annual subs. It should also be noted that it is the club that is paying for affiliation, not the member.
