What are your distances per club?

golfmad, the thing about GPS is that it can teach you course management.

most of think we hit a lot further than we do, (witness all those balls found 20 yds behind where we look!) so what does that say about our ability to judge distance?

or is it more about our ability to hit to a given distance?

me, I'll take all the help I can.

I think the pro's average drive is measured on two specified holes on what ever course they are playing. These are clearly chosen for being suitable terrain, fairway width, wind direction etc for getting a sensible measurement.

Now the fairways are softer (you couldn't measure an average this june, as it was totally unrealistic with the hard ground) most of the guys I play with (and there are some big hitters) are probably hitting about 260. For me, the best are around this, but more around 250. I hit one in June at 283, and since getting a SC I have done this twice.

With a 96 mph swing speed (national average for a club golfer is 86) I am carrying about 220 (I know this because a/ I have had it measured on a monitor, and b/ I plugged in the top of a bunker face which SC had at 225 carry, no wind).

For those whose swing speeds have been measured, then yes, if you swing above 110 mph I believe you hit it long, but in the main I remain sceptical. If the national average is 86, I am above average (evidenced by not often being the shortest off the tee in my fourball), and so many must be below 86 mph to get an average that low. Odd we don't have any of these on here.

Swing speed and computers dont really tell the whole story.

Its ball speed that counts for more when it comes to distance.

A few years ago i played in a comp, very windy, downwind out into wind back nine. I was 2 over going out and played very tee shot on P4/5 with a 5 iron, hit every fairway and then hit every green with a wedge-8I.

Taught me a lesson about ball control and how easy it is to score when you hit every fairway and green. Annoying thing is i dropped the 2 shots with stupid 3 putts. If only i practised putting more!!!

TW's ball speed yesterday was measured at 173 off a swing of 117 = 'smash factor' of 1.48

mine (best measured at demo) 135 off 93 = 1.45 (happy with that) - bit of a difference in carry and roll though.

the ball supposedly retains about 75% of its initial speed to first impact

I will try to record some more of these (JB, JD etc).

Made me chuckle this thread !
I was one of the 1st to post, and my 'distances' are exactly that,....'MY' distances, or average, etc etc. I dont care how far or not anyone else hits it, its absolutely irrelevent to me, and what does make me chuckle is when anyone else try and see what you have hit, as if its of any use to them ?

I agree with whoever it was that suggested that it was some of the 'short' hitters that get their feathers ruffled a bit, it certainly seems so.
I know I can hit a Driver 300+ when I nail it, but it gets me into bother too often, so I'm carrying a 3W only, which I'm still usually further than my regular playing partners with anyway.
They dont care, I dont care, it doesnt make a scrap of difference, but it IS my distance.

Some great posts on this thread. We ALL know members at our club who can clout a driver 300 yards, and this thread has posed some serious bragging rights questions.

However Tiger Woods did not win 14 majors by hitting the ball a long way, he did it by ...................

............taking the least number of shots.

Take your point Viscount17 and I'm sure they would help me but at the moment I just need to concentrate on hitting the ball and in the right direction. When I discover some consistency and handicap comes down, perhaps I'll consider one then.

Golfmmad. :D :D

I think alot of guys on here must believe their member is also 17+ inches.

Here are my carry distances (average using GPS)

Driver 239
3 wood 221
5 wood 207

2 iron 187
4 iron 180
5 iron 168
6 iron 161
7 iron 154
8 iron 146
9 iron 135
pw 117
gw 102
lw 54

These were measured using 10 balls per club at the practice area at East Renfrewshire Golf club by my mate and I for a bit of fun and also to see how for we did actually hit the ball. I also nearly scudded him with a full toss 5 wood, hows zat for accuracy!!!!

I'm now quite worried about the distance between the 9 iron and PW!!!!

Crazy idea using yardages we should just go back to eye measurement!
