so , have just got in from a nightmare round , now everyone has bad rounds but this was worse than bad , since getting my 21 hcp last month i have been consistently shooting under it , between 85-95 . however today i shot......115! shanked almost every single iron and wedge shot, and skied all my drives , and when i did hit a decent drive i would go and shank it into the trees , i ended up losing 8 balls. and getting 4 , yes 4 points with a 62 on the front!

anyway i have quite a big junior comp tomorow and i dont no if i should play , this wil be my first one because i usually cannot enter them on sundays as i also play rugby league. i will be playing with low single figure hcps and if im still shanking it it will be extremely embarrasing! so has anyone got any tips for the shanks , and should i play in the comp?

thanks guys :o

so has anyone got any tips for the shanks ,

Yes, don't shank it!

Make sure you keep your hands away from your thighs to give you enough room to swing the club inside. If you set up with your hands too close to your thighs there is no space for them to swing through, they move away from your body slightly and you shank it.

Hey Ant

Panic not, this is the Golfing Gods playing with your mind.

You must play tomorrow, put today down to experience and file it away, tomorrow is another day.

You are very young and possibly just got wound up after a couple of bad holes, this in turn tensed you up and the rest is history.

Get out there and relax, play your own game, Dont try to hit the ball too hard. it is not the open championship, you are 13 and only just have your first handicap,It is your first comp and they will be expecting the odd wild shot.

The trick is not to let it get to you.

Just dont go out aiming to win, not yet.
Go out aiming to learn, dont worry about the points till the 19th, adding up points along the way just creates tension and stress.

Chill Buddy

Post back tomorrow and let us know how it went

Get your frame of mind right and play tomorrow.

Don't approach the round thinking about what went wrong today, think about the shots that went right and think about how you aren't going to make the same mistakes again.

Slow that swing down a touch and focus on making a clean contact with a smooth swing rather than trying to kill the golf ball with a hard swing.

And when you've done all that come back and tell us how you did.

Club up and slower is what I've been told but dont know if it works as inconsistency is always a problem with higher handicaps, especially me but if I slow down a little and use a 6 instead of a full blown 5 for example I find it helps.

and should i play in the comp?

Yes. The problem to which you refer, which must not be mentioned, comes along like buses. You'll get a load and then none for ages.
Get back on the horse; if it should happen again, try to take 1 less shot tomorrow (over the whole round) than today.

We have a weekly 9 hole comp at mine. Stableford. First time I ever played it (2007) I made 10 points. Next week I was so determined to make 18, I made 9. I then tried to beat 9 and have never looked back.

Totally agree with everyone that says play. Its so easy to decide not to enter a comp because you aren't playing well but if you aren't careful it can become habit forming. Go out, try your best but don't try and compete with the low handicappers but use your shots and play within yourself

Dont worry about it and go and play some competitive golf :). I had a bad round (well back 9) on Friday. I was 1 over after 9 and finished 13 over for the round, and yes im going to play tomorrow in the comp. Try and forget about it and most of all enjoy your golf :)
