Absolutely love watching the masters but got to be the open for me, especially being able to go and the different venues etc. very biased towards links golf though.

What’s the US Mastes? 😉

Presuming the OP meant the Masters, that is my favourite.

Followed by the US Open, especially when it visits a more diverse type of of course as it has more recently.

Then The British Open, occasionally interesting when the weather is awful, but it pretty much looks the same every year.

Then the PGA, it’s ok.

Majors should be open, so there are only 2 options, and The Open > US Open.

The Masters is one of my favourite tournaments but (for many reasons) it has no business being be a major.
The PGA has never been one for me to get very excited about and it also shouldn't be a major but for very different reasons.

Masters should be Open ?

The Masters can do whatever it likes, but being a closed invitational is certainly one of the reasons I don't think it should be a major.

Closed ?

Whilst it has a smaller field than others it’s still a competition that golfers can qualify for to play in it

Same as people qualify to enter the other 3 majors

Hard disagree

Presumably if one of the main reasons people rate the Masters is because it’s so recognisably and comfortably familiar, then why not have the Open Championship at Birkdale or Carnoustie every year…(I know the reasons why not, and why it moves around)

But in the eyes of some, and in the eyes of many casual sports fans, it would easily become much more familiar and recognisable as holes and pin positions are easily recognisable and remembered from years before

Yes, closed.
There is no open means of entry and no open qualifying tournaments for either The Masters (invitation only) or the PGA Championship (exemption & invitation).

The Open, but I don’t think it’s played at the right time of year. The Masters is just the start of the majors .. but to be honest it’s a putting/distance competition and it’s an elitist course .. so who cares I only watched it because it was on terrestrial TV. The other majors I have not even bothered with they are just hyped tour events
One of the things I really enjoy about the Open and makes it such a good tournament is that is close to the height of summer and fairly far north. This gives very prolonged daylight and allows a large field to enter.

But there are tournaments that players play in that enable people to qualify for the major

So it’s not closed it’s just a different level of qualifying for entry
It's an invitational tournament. By it's nature it is not open to all. You can qualify in certain ways but it is far more restrictive than the others, as is pointed out every time the tournament starts.

It is more restrictive due to the numbers that can be hosted there but it’s invite by name , players earn the invite through various performances

Rankings , comp wins etc

The definition of a Major has never been to include any sort of “Open” qualifying

And I’m one of those that’s been vocal in the past about the major status of The Masters - it not a tick box must go and watch for me

But it’s not closed off - it’s just a limited field because of the time of the year to get the numbers on the course

The ones that matter have it as a major and for many the one they want
