The Open.

I like The Masters as it represents the start of the golf season here, but the way it’s presented is corny as hell.

People presenting jackets who think they are way more valuable to the world than they actually are, and all that schizzle.
The Butler Cabin is a shed - you’d think it was Westminster Abbey the way people hold it in high regard.

And as for the fake bird noises….

Surely Jones won 13? It wasn't his fault that the concept of important tournaments was different when he was in his pomp. Discuss 🙂
Yes.
Five times US Amateur and one time The Amateur Championship.
Together with 4 times US Open and 3 times The Open.

All 13 wins done in a period of only 8 years.
In 1930 he won a grand Slam of all four in that year and then retired at age 30.

But if we stick to his wins of the professional US Open and The Open.
And compare with other greats in those two events.
He won 7 in 8 years.

Harry Vardon won 7 in 19 years.
Jack Nicklaus won 7 in 19 years
Tiger Woods won 6 in 9 years.
Tom Watson won 6 in 9 years
Walter Hagen won 6 in 16 years. But that included some years when tournaments were cancelled due to war.

I wonder who else might be able to join this list by achieving 6 or more wins of The Open and US Open?
For now, they are The Big Six.
Could we have a Magnificent Seven one day?

This is interesting because you see either a totally dominant period for a golfer or longevity.. I prefer the latter myself

And chronologically Hagen and Jones overlapped for a few years, Vardon and Hagen for one year.
Watson sitting entirely within the Nicklaus years.
I don't think any current player will match the 6 wins of Open and US Open.

i love the open, I've been lucky enough to go to a few and its great value for money considering how much play you can see in a day in my opinion.
The TV coverage for the open is great.........
unlike the masters which im addicted too but a) i always apply for a ticket but always get the "unfortunately not this year sunshine" and b) the TV coverage does my brains

Voted the Masters only because I can’t sit in watching golf during the day.
Open is the best golf but I only see the highlights usually.

I like the Players because I have played Sawgrass and know how hard it is.
Always enjoy watching pros struggle on 17 th as I got an easy par .😂

The Masters and The Open for me. The other two are watchable but I'm not really arsed.

The Masters is iconic, August has a level of mystique and visual beauty that's unmatched. The green jacket, Amen Corner, Rae's Creek and so on.

The Open is the oldest major, the deep history of the tournament, links golf at it's purest. Wind, rain, firm turf, pot bunkers and creative shot making.

It's hard to differentiate as they are both very different tournaments but both are pretty special.

US Open for me. Not that I was overly keen on Oakmont but in general I prefer it to the Open. Ideal for us with the time difference imo Saturday nights watching the 3rd round especially. I like when they set the courses up to be more difficult than most tour courses, though obviously the last one was too far.

The Masters I barely watch. Can't go the exclusivity of it. The Open is boring for me. Can't pinpoint why but don't like watching link courses on tele.

Nice to see a different perspective.
Do you not like links golf courses yourself?

The worst thing about the US Open for me is when players hit a pretty good shot, just miss the green, and end up in 8 inch deep rough.

I don’t like seeing golfers punished unnecessarily, even more so when it’s me.

That's what ruined this year's for me. Quite happy to see them punished with long grass for wayward driving. But when they've hit a green that's made of glass, the ball just trickles off and the ball disappears, that's not fair, or fun to watch either. The players who have a great short game don't get any advantage from it because everyone is just hacking it into the green in that scenario. So all four days you never get to see one nice chip shot.

Exactly.
Love seeing the pros nip a wedge off links turf and see it check up right by the pin. A much more difficult skill than hitting it like Bryson.

To add: the punishment for just trickling off the green and hurtling across it are pretty similar once the ball encounters 6 inch grass on 'roids. I'm not a fan.
In fact, acres of 'roided and watered rough is one of my pet hates, so I find both the summer US Majors a bit meh (although a few of the US open courses are a little more sensible, like Pinehurst).
I'm a big fan of our Open. Great golf courses on wonderful land. 1 tee starts, a full field with genuinely open qualification. Really looking forward to it, hoping the weather is in the goldilocks zone.

That’s not much different to golf on a links course, you can hit the middle of a fairway and get a random bounce into a pot bunker or deep fescue. Or off a green into a pot bunker.

I'm not sure tbh. Just find all a bit too similar and they can be as harsh as a US Open set up aswell
