• We'd like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy Holidays and a very Merry Christmas from all at Golf Monthly. Thank you for sharing your 2025 with us!

What’s the warmest thing you wear?

Thermal leggings and a down golf skirt. Thermal layer or compression skin underneath my shirt. Have a Callaway jacket as well.

As with everything golf, I have acquired multiple options - base layers only for very cold days, hoodies (thin and thick), but the gilet is king. I have thin, thick, quilted. Waterproof quarter zips in short and long sleeves.

The key to non restrictive tops is to have a zip with opens at the bottom on a gilet.

I've a few thermal baselayers and good jumpers along with a gilet.

A good pair of socks and a good hat are probably the most important things.

And, I've been known to wear ski trousers instead of regular waterproofs.

The only 2 bits of winter clothing needed in this country. Merino wool is exceptional for warmth and breathability, I even wear Merino socks for work for that very reason and a lightweight down jacket will provide all the insulation you need.

I don’t buy any winter golf clothing either, all my winter get up comes from Uniqlo top quality merino wool and down clothing for really good prices. Sadly this year there’s be no winter golf for me 😔
God bless Kiwi Merino's , Merino/ possum socks are the tru Rolls Royce of socks

Winter. Always a base layer.

As Someone said at the club.

“There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing"

Any idiot can get cold.

I usually wear shorts until November, with a polo shirt and a light jumper if required.

After that it's a light pair of trousers, polo shirt, light or medium jumper and then shower top (sleeves optional) or full rain clothes if required.

I don't feel the cold much - my wife usually wears a couple of layers more than me when out walking.

Great choice of socks 👌 in a big fan of Brigdale Merino wool socks, they do various weights, lightweight in summer prevent feet sweating, medium are great for cooler temps and the heavyweights are superb for below 0° they’re not badly priced either. I’ve also got some Under Armour ones for work absolutely take a battering and still going strong.

That first line is one of the worst bits of advice there absolutely is such a thing as bad weather!

However you are correct any idiot can be cold. It’s all about wearing suitable loose layers to trap air and create warmth. Never wear anything to tight and restrictive that reduces circulation and makes you colder.

Same as everyone else really, layer up. The only other thing I’d add are the rechargeable hand warmers. My hands do get pretty cold and so I’ll pop one in each mitten.

If we are adding items for when it is really cold......my kids got me a heated gilet a few Christmas's ago. It's a lightweight gilet with a rechargeable battery pack. You can heat the front, back or both. Brilliant bit of kit for those cold winter starts. I believe they are very popular with football pundits up in commentary positions, sat in the cold. Really not expensive and a great bit of kit for when it is extra chilly.

I wear shorts all year round. When it gets chilly I will stick a jumper/hoodie. Beanie for the head and if it is baltic have some rechargeable hand warmers for the pocket

Has anyone tried the bamboo baselayers ?
Not the baselayers but I have tried a few bamboo things.
Underwear is great; have worn Bam trunks for years because it's more comfortable than cotton.
Other stuff I haven't got on with. Socks and t-shirts for me have all the same drawbacks as cotton. If it gets damp with sweat it stays damp and I don't find it particularly comfortable.

What part of the country are you in?

I'm in the NE of England. You get the odd person doing this but it really is not that feasible, or pleasant, to do that up here.

I hate the cold weather.
So it’s layers on the top, especially the gilet, woolly hat, padded walking trousers, quality socks and if needed my zippo hand warmer.

What’s the warmest thing you wear?

Two things - M&S thermal long johns and M&S thermal long sleeve.

Huge selection of other stuff to choose from to go on top of those.

If you’re someone that really suffers with the cold. I’d recommend Merino wool thermals, you’ll be toasty and any sweat will wick away keeping you warm and dry.

Then if you’re a really cold blooded lizard 🦎, try something like Aclima or Brynje wool net thermals. You’ll look like you belong on some kind register!! But you will never find anything warmer as the air pockets trap body heat and keep you warm than Satan in the fires of hell. I can wear just those and a thin outer layer in temperatures as low -25° they’re that damn warm 🔥
