Well, what do you think

That's great going Mac and all credit to you.

I know that the AP's will get me there and all my practice is pretty much short game now, but, the theory is that I hit a few poor shots in most rounds and a while back changed from a Titleist driver to a Ping G15 because it was just so much easier to hit and I made more fairways and I was wondering whether a change to an easier iron set would do the same.

AP2s aren't exactly unforgiving Chris. I'd like to claim I was the finest ball striker the forum has ever seen but I'm not. But I hit the AP2s well enough, and they give me enough forgiveness when I don't.

That said, if you think a change is what you need, go for it. But if you get to single figures, don't forget, it's you that got you there, not the clubs.

I have played i20's since April 2012 and love them - very forgiving. However, I have just got a set of G25's (4-sw)in the same spec just to see how they go as after the arrival of our second child it is already apparent my golf will be limited to medals with zero practices and if the make it easier and enjoyable then great! If not I will just sell them on. Will probably use my tour gorge wedges still.

will report back to see if I see any noticeable difference and my opinions if you like but that won't be till next Friday.

p.s - I may have done all this golf stuff backwards ... Started playing golf and after 6 months went and bought ping s57 irons, joined a club and got first handicap of 20. Used them for 18 months and got to 14hc. Then purchased i20's and am now 6.1......where can the g25's take me?

pps - yes, I know I started a thread about pledging not to buy a single club in 2014:rolleyes:

Try the i20's for a round or 2 if u can. G25's just look too chunky. I intend to give mine a great rattle all this year after limited play last year after purchase. Good luck.

I've been thinking about my assault on single figures this year after getting down to 10 late in 2013. Part of the thinking has involved in some short game lessons and I've just booked another 8 weekly lessons on a deal I couldn't say no to.

So, I've played Titleist AP'2 for three years now and generally hit them ok, but, whilst looking with a golfing pal for easier clubs for him to play we both wondered whether game improvement clubs were the way for me to go too. I hit a Ping G25 demo iron a few days ago - yes, I'm old enough! And I couldn't hit it badlly, even on the iffy swings, so, if I could save 3 shots a round by using easier clubs would I be a fool not to go that way?

It seems to me that vanity over what clubs I play should possibly be less of a consideration than how, whatever I use, performs

Any views?

Is this the Chris I played with at West Hill ? Not a bad shot all day, you were striking those ap2's really well, I would think long and hard, one good competitive round and your there, then there will be no stopping you.

:thup::thup:

Chris you ap's have served you well, if you truly fancy a change what about newer ap's. Your specs may have changed, you may require different shafts or different lies but you know the ap range has served you well.

What's the worse that can happen, 714 ap2's

At the risk of becoming a stats bore (ahh what the hell, I am a stats bore), do you know where you are actually losing your shots?

I'd have a read of this then maybe try to think where your 10 shots or so per round are lost http://www.columbia.edu/~mnb2/broadie/Assets/broadie_wscg_v_200804.pdf.

I know you say you're having a short game lesson, but there's always shots to be saved by avoiding ending up in a 'short game' situation in the first place. Chances are though, the way to take your handicap down is by just getting better at everything, so keep up with the lessons and practice.

I played today on initially a frosty course then getting squiggy when it defrosted. The AP2's went pretty well and I think that they are staying in the bag at the moment.

Thanks for all your input, it's always interesting to read the varying opinions and particularly of those who have played with me. I will still wonder whether, say the Ping i20's, would save any shots but I think that my recent short game lessons are going to pay dividends and I'm taking advantage of a special price coaching deal my pro is doing and that's another 8 half hour lessons starting in a week or so. So there's plenty to be going on with until Easter time!

I really appreciate all your comments -thanks!

That's interesting Ian as my coach has said he want me to work on weaknesses highlighted by stats. He wants me to do Golf Stats Lab so that we know where I drop most shots. I think that I certainly could make a few more putts and second shots always could be improved upon as well as grooving the short fame with the lessons I've had.

This one is an interesting page, based on the same research, which might help you identify weaknesses.

If you are interested...........

Did a 9 hole comparison with my i20's vs G25's (G25's same dot colour and CFS stiff but 0.25" shorter) and to cut a long story short I hit my i20's further and more accurately. The size of the G25 is not bad at all, but the offset was too much for my mind to deal with and I hit the ball fat which is a rare shot for me.
