I've been thinking about my assault on single figures this year after getting down to 10 late in 2013. Part of the thinking has involved in some short game lessons and I've just booked another 8 weekly lessons on a deal I couldn't say no to.

So, I've played Titleist AP'2 for three years now and generally hit them ok, but, whilst looking with a golfing pal for easier clubs for him to play we both wondered whether game improvement clubs were the way for me to go too. I hit a Ping G25 demo iron a few days ago - yes, I'm old enough! And I couldn't hit it badlly, even on the iffy swings, so, if I could save 3 shots a round by using easier clubs would I be a fool not to go that way?

It seems to me that vanity over what clubs I play should possibly be less of a consideration than how, whatever I use, performs

Any views?

Just get some nice iron head covers and no one will ever know.

My playing partner has just ditched his G25's and has gone back to his G2's. Seems some can hit them badly.

I hit some i5's the other day at the range - wow did they fly!

You hit those AP2's well Chris, how many bad strikes do you get that actually cost you shots..?
Do you need to draw/fade? Not saying you can't with G25's but it's more difficult for sure.

The AP's are fairly forgiving anyway - not convinced that you wouldn't feel like Homer does now.....

I would see how the lessons go first.
Also,if it was a matter of just changing clubs to save 3 shots we all would be doing it.
If only it was that simple

chris you are aware that any club other than your own is easier to hit until purchased! ;)

Oh yes ..... It was ever so!

just made the change g20 to ap2..... never going back to shovels again

Why did you change?

You could be right but the AP's are not always very forgiving

The lesson will mostly be short game. 3 shots saved was just a guess

the way I see it Chris is this. To get to 10 you must have a tidy game regardless of clubs used. If you feel a change of irons can bring you down further then a percentage of that is about belief or even a placebo. Golf is a game of confidence as much as ability so GO FOR IT and say hello to a lower h/c

That's it in a nutshell Gibbo, hence the slight indecision and the question I have asked

Your handicap is coming down nicely Chris, and even at your great age you still have time to get lower. I would stick with your existing clubs a bit longer before turning to shovels.

If you can get to 10 using AP2s you can get to single figures, GI clubs won't save you 3 shots a round, I don't care what anyone says, they won't.

I would suggest stop looking for a short cut that doesn't exist and get your short game sorted out.

My clubs: AP2s
My h'cap Jan 2013: 10.0
My h'cap Dec 2013: 7.5

It ain't the clubs

I'm only a few months older than you!

That's sound advice, thanks

Don't do it. I regret it even though the G25 performed best at the fitting. The short clubs are pig ugly and suck confidence. It is the main reason I'm looking to switch back to the I range. No surprise that I seem to have played better with the TM Tour preferred's I had before and which are back in the bag. I hit the I 20 at the range last night and although just a 7 iron was immediately more comfy looking down on the smaller head

Thanks Homer. I'm still thinking on the matter, I might even try I20's
