Well done Wenger

My god, is it possible to have even one football conversation on here without Liverpool being dragged into it? Why the obsession?

This is a post on Arsene Wenger. I know football posts will always move about, but what has it to do with Liverpool?

Congratulations on winning the FA cup, a massive monkey off his back. Is he holding Arsenal back, or will he finally buy a Mascherano-like player and some good centre halves, and even 1-2 forwards? If he does and he wins future trophies, fair enough.

If he doesnt in the next 2-3 years, and they just keep finishing 3rd/4th and dont add to the trophies tally, he is just doing a more inflated version of what Newcastle's ambitions are (winning the financial security trophy).

Which one do you think will happen?

Because Liverpool fans were comparing/belittling their achievements :ears:

If he doesn't kick on and sort out defence (who were poor again yesterday) it will be more of the same. At some point they have to make he most of the (impressive) way the business has been run over the last few years.

Harder to attract players to arsenal than City/Chelsea maybe?

Wrong my friend, A liverpool fan.

Arsenal's defensive pairing has improved (against the lesser teams), but were blown away by the top 4. You also need cover in that position, especially with Arsenal's fabled injury runs. Vermaelen was a cracking player 2 -3 seasons ago, but hardly see him now. Sagna will also probably be leaving.

Arsene seems to bring full backs through at will, but struggles to bring through or sign great centre halves/defensive midfielders. This is his blind spot.

I think generally of you're having a discussion with someone you try to use relevant examples. So, if it'd been a sours fan crowing then the responses would of been about spurs. But if a Liverpool fan makes a point the. People point out their short comings too. If discussions are to stop turning into Liverpool debates, then maybe Liverpool fan/s need to stop commenting on these posts.

Not it that I think that should be the case.

With the much improved form of Per and Laurent this past season not sure if a pair of new centre halfs is any longer a big requirement...

41 goals against this season ? Our defending was shocking this season and Arsenals was only mildly better - think you lakc the same thing we do - a mobile vocal CB to do the organising - a Terry or a Kompany.

Sorry yes, was only the one. (Although is e reason everything becomes about Liverpool....)

Mertesacker and Koscielny wouldn't, in my view, get anywhere near the first teams of City or Chelsea. Always prone to at least one cock up every match, even yesterday Mertesacker tried his best to set up a Hull goal! As you say Vermaelen seems to have disappeared and don't even know who they have beyond that?

Agree its his failing (would even add keepers to that). His great teams were based largely on the defenders he inherited.

I made a point about Wenger that i have seen being made from Arsenal fans themselves - and the immediate reply it to turn it onto Liverpool and BR. I wanted to make a point about Wenger - can opposition fans nit make points about other teams without it going down a tit for tat route ?

Is there something in my initial point that is that wrong ? Appears everytime i do make a response about another club the default answer is to talk about Liverpool ( also from Spurs and Chelsea fans in the Arsenal thread it appears )

Why? That is what is wrong with a lot of footy threads on here recently.

Can you not comment as a footy fan and not have to be pigeonholed, and it always being tainted. Discussing footy on here was mainly a pleasure, but the last year is getting worse, with childish wind-up merchants throwing there tuppence worth in just to get a reaction. They dont want to get involved in reasoned debate, or stick with banter, they just want to draw blood.

There are a good many people on here who I could talk to about footy until the cows come home (yourself included), and some of our bitterest rivals I also enjoy chatting with who are Man U, Everton and Chelsea fans (Bladeplayer,Fish, Blue in Munich,PBrown amongst others).

It is the ones that have an unnatural aversion to clubs that seem to be the bitterest. I can see footy getting pulled from here and it would be a great shame, but understandable the way it's going.

I think the defence is fine. Tactics need to be resolved for the bigger games. But they conceded what 30 against the top 4? So 11 in best part of 30 games is pretty good.

The lack of replacement for Veira is key to their issues.

I remember watching an interview with him about his changing ideas from the old - Adams, Keown, Veira axis in the middle - he believed that a big ball winner just wasnt needed anymore and pointed to both Barce and Spain as perfect examples of this issue - yet they have Busquets right smack in the middle as the big ball winner.

Also needs to look at Walcott - wonderful player but never going to get a full season and no cover.

For the first half of his time at Arsenal he had no problems in this area... The second half is another matter....
Yep, because he inherited a masterful defence who had been brilliant under George Graham's tutelage. they also had Viera and Pettit in front. He has not replaced any of these players to the same standard.

Read your post 20 Phil.

Read your post 20 Phil.

What about it ?

I said that 2nd goes straight into the CL group stages and the difference between the two teams season is clear as day ?

What exactly is wrong with that statement ?

I'm not getting into one of your circular arguments Phil.

Nothing wrong with it, just brought Liverpool into it.

I'm out, apologies for ring involved in taking this off track.

Im not looking for any circular argument - im just very curious to know exactly what it is about the comment that has caused so much problem ?

Just seen your edit - please read the posts previously before mine especially post 14 when Brendan Rodgers was brought into the conversation ?!

I guess it was easier to point the finger at me.

I agree GG laid the foundations but after his 'untimely' departure Arsenal were a club spiralling into oblivion... AW steadied the ship and took the club onto some great things... Not saying any of the others that were touted to fill the void couldn't have done the same... Anyhows I forgive him for a lot of his failings as without his arrival I don't think I'd have seen the best of Denis...

Wenger was a fantastic manager in his time, and brought a lot of good changes and attitudes to the English game as well as great forwards and teams. However, I think he has never been able to re-create that defence which was already in place for him, which is one of the major reasons that he hadn't won anything for 9 years. I think he has also became stubborn and inflexible with regards to tactics and wage structures/signings, which has meant Arsenal have regressed, albeit if City and Chelsea's sugar daddies hadn't have come along, he might have had a few more leagues under his belt. Ferguson managed to cope though.

The next 2-3 years will see if what he has built, and the financial basis that he has created will see him spend and identify the right players and go onto better things. Time will tell.
