The PW with my set is 46 degrees of loft. I currently have a 56 degree sand wedge, meaning there is quite a big gap between these two clubs. I think i need to fill it.

I guess the ideal wedge combination for me would be 50, 54 and 58. However, this is quite expensive and I already have the 56, which I would like to keep for the time being at least.

So what do you think I should look at to fill the gap? 50 or 52 deg? I am leaning toards a 50 deg, as I think this may be more versatile i.e. opening the face to provide more loft.

Also, all of the decent wedges seem to be around the £70 to £80 mark at the moment. I am looking at Titleist Vokey or the TM ZTP. However, a friend of mine has Cally X Forged and they look great, but slightly more expensive. Any recommendations?

Cheers

I had my PW de-lofted to 47 and play with 47/52/56. Works for me. Effectively (counting from 9 iron) 42/47/52/56. I don't use the SW for full shots anyway so I have a good choice of full shots 125/110/95 or thereabouts. I'm currently working on a 3/4 swing to use which (PW/GW/SW) offers 100/85/70.

That's it. Give me a distance and I'll have a shot for it (within 5 yards or so) with only two swings. 60 yards and under I'm not breaking the wrists, unless I'm going for broke with a "flop".

My PW is 46 and I went with a 52 and a 58 to give me an even 6 degree gap. I also got a 56 and 60 and so sometimes carry a 52, 56 and 60.

Have a look online as I'm sure there must be some deals to be had. Otherwise MD wedges are exceptionally good value for money

Never?

You've got me worried now. I suppose occasionally I might play a big-ish swing for a short shot (with a SW laid open for the aerial route) but mostly I just bump a PW or GW just short of the green and let it roll out.

I guess (without meaning to sound too clever, which I'm not ) it's about choosing wedges to a) have a good spread of yardages on full shots and b) having a selection which you can simplify for ease of use. I don't use my Vokey SW out of heavy lies unless I have no choice. My GW feels "heavy" in the clubhead (which I like) and pops the ball up high enough for most situations.

I must thank you though Bob for your thoughts a while back on gripping down and experimenting. At first, I felt cramped and scared of thinning shots holding a club that is effectively only 32 inches long (oo-er) but I'm getting some nice results.

This is where feel and imagination seem so important. You know, faced with a 60 yarder......do I choke way down and hit a full SW. Do I run in a small swing with a PW or send the ball on a snow-collecting flight with a LW? Choices, choices - the less the better for me.

:)

I've just booked some lessons to try to deal with this very thing, I have lost all confidence from 100 yrds in and it's costing me big time. It used to be my strong part of the game but a few shhhhh (no can't say it)and I'm backing off virtually every wedge shot.

A good choice of wedges Is titleist vokey,
Cally forged and taylormade tp. But the only
Bad thing about the titleist vokey is that it
Very easily duffs up but very good if u want
To get a bit more spin.

i have the same problem (i use callaway x20 tour irons) and i have 46*, 50*, 54*. i would ideally add in a 58* but the gap between my 46* + 54* seems to have closed with the use of the gap wedge and i can open the face of the 54* to provide high shots.
