He's been at the club 6 years, which is about average for top players these days.

He signs a new contract and now Man Utd can get a decent price for him in Jan/Jul/etc. whenever they come to cash in, as opposed to a) losing money on him and b) having all other players cost more to replace him.

If any Man U fan thinks he will be there for the 5 years, they're mad.

I foolishly hoped that this was finally a player telling Fergie to shove it for having his international career ruined (making him play when palpably not fit just before the WC meaning he went to the WC carrying an injury and then playing like a tool), but alas it appears to just be all about the money *sigh*.

Right decision for who?

For United? No. They should have booted him out of the door.

For Rooney? Yes. He's undoubtedly got the extra cash he wanted and signed his big fat contract.

Alternatively, Sir Alex is pulling a fast one and got him signed to a big fat contract with the view to shop him during January. (Players with Bigger contracts = more cash for the club)

I suppose I meant him, but really the overall situation too!

I think you are right though for him, it has done his bank balance the world of good, but as for his football we will have to wait and see…

Spot on Aztecs, - could go either way.

My money is on him going in January. Fergie hates anyone calling the shots, which undoubtably Shrek & his advisors have done, and bagged him more money, which was possibly the intention all along.

This way, United will undoubtably reap Millions from any sale.

I hope he gets boo'd at every kick, for someone to play so badly this season, and still get more per week than most fans see in 5yrs, is simply unnaceptable.

Anyone see Ian Holloway going off on one about this on SSNews - the Man is a Legend!!

Aztec's got it spot on. He's been no good this season so far - why expect him to be any different now? He's crossed Sir Alex and his days are numbered.

The whole saga has made fools out of a lot of them. Fans & manager.

I can't figure out what's changed.

Possibilities are:
a) Rooney has simply had a change of heart
b) The club have provided the assurances on squad strengthening he was after
c) It was all part of a plan to get more money for Rooney
d) He will be sold anyway but he's agreed to sign to ensure Utd get a good price

Time will tell which one it is. I can't see the Glazer's agreeing to a spending spree with money they don't have just to appease Rooney.

There is a very slim chance it was a ploy to try and get Sir Alex more money out of the Glazers by stating that the club needs to invest. As i say slim chance but time will tell what the real story is.

let me put it this way; if there was one person at Man U that you would choose as a partner in a subtle ploy to get more money for you, would you pick Rooney?

As the most valuable playing asset of the club surely he is the only player you could pick?

no, I'd go for the player who can string two consecutive thoughts together without somebodys hand up his back.

2/3 years from now fergie be gone, paul scholes be gone and of course ryan giggs will be gone..

No players coming in near the same level..

There time is over !!!!! hehehehehe

14 of the squad is under 22. I am not saying they will all be world beaters but surely that has significance.

I don't believe there was ever any doubt he'd re-sign. It was all about moving the spotlight away from his private life and it's worked perfectly. His misdemeanors off-field hav'nt been mentioned for days.

Where else could he go? Spain? He can't even speak English and his wife won't move. Once City and Chelsea said they weren't that interested, he had to take Uniteds offer.

It was a good move by Utd to get him signed up so they can maximise his transfer value but could backfire if no-one wants him. I don't know if I believe that City and Chelsea would really turn him down if they could do the right deal.
