I got a call out of the blue on Friday from a head hunting company asking if a job with a 'leading' golf brand would float my boat ????

It's a no brainer I thought and asked the fella to give me more details .... he told me it would be selling into independent retailers and pro shops and it would mean taking on an established area which is Scotland and Ireland. I was getting excited at this point and already had visions of getting kitted out with my new 'sponsors' gear.

Then the guy took the feet from under me...... the basic salary was £6,000 LESS than what I am on and when I asked him to repeat the salary he added that people take jobs with this company 'FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME' !!!!!!!!!!

I told him where to put his golfing brand and also told him I was insulted by his phone call and asked him to politely EFF OFF !!!!!!!!!!

Would you have taken a job like that for less swag???

Ive been in a job I have never liked for 20 years and I have only 3 weeks left before I start working for myself.

I am only doing it though because I am confident we as a family will not be any worse off.

There is a lot to be said for being in a job you really enjoy because we spend so much time at work but you still gotta pay the bills.

It depends on your family finances. If you could COMFORTABLY sustain your present lifestyle on that amount of money then I would have viewed it as a good opportunity but if not then its a no goer. To be fair I would probably have reacted less indignantly and tried to find out a bit more about it and maybe had a go at negotiating the salary figure up.

I presume you aren't going to say who

The 'consultant' said it the salary was non negotiable and that on target earnings were still 2k short of my basic.

The funny thing is I am like a dog with two d.. tails in my current job and it would have taken something like a vacancy as Tigers caddy to make me leave...

Madandra,

There is a guy who lives not far from me who did this sort of thing some time ago. He ended up working for three different manufacturers selling to pro shops and retailers alike.

Obviously not a big earner though as he jacked it in not long after.

Anyway, witth a nice colourfull golf bag like you have, you don't need a change !

Whoa, what a roller coaster. One minute, you're thinking "whey-hey, chanceroooni" then "arse......"

Pity, you must have thought you were on to a winner. :(

It depends on whatthe job is.

I like my job and would REALLY have to like what was on offer.

If it was something like, playing pro football OR golf for that matter, I would play/work for far less than I currently earn.
Otherwise, I would do like you did and tell them to "swivel"

It really depends on how much you'd like the job, and how important that £6k is.

If you're on £20k now, the drop is huge, if you're on £150k the drop is pretty insignificant and mostly tax anyway, so would be worth it.

If you love your current job now, its really not worth it.

You always have to look at the other side too, its great doing a job you love, but depending on what it is, the job can make the thing you love become a chore.

Pal of my is a pro, he gave up playing on the Swiss tour because it was too stressful to make good money and he knew if he carried on he would resent the game. Now he works in JJB as the golf manager and makes less but loves it

On Target earnings...! rolleyes. Been there done that. Did a sales job some years that had an on target earnings figure. Essentially it'll be a very small basic that wouldn't pay the petrol or diesel over the month the rest of the on-target earnings would be up to you in the form of commision, with bonuses.

There was a large office of us, I was always in the top 5 of sales people out of over 30 of us & never made the ontarget earnings more than twice over the time I was with them. Only 2 of the sales people regularly made more than the on target, as they made enough sales to be given extra opertunities to go after & so on.

Golf industry sales is probably much different to what I was selling but I'd always be suspicious about on target earnings.

That said what is 6k too low for one person could well be 6k more than they are currently on for another.

I must admit I'd seriously consider an opertunity like that, though would depend upon the company & what I thought of their products. Product knowledge is an absolute must in any sales job.

At the moment no matter what the salary I might seriously consider it as I'm really getting peed off where I am.

I thought long and hard about the job at AG. I use to love the shop work as an assistant pro and felt that I could put up with the quiet periods as I'm one who will always find something to do. The lure of being at a golf course (with free access) also appealed as did using the launch monitor and the gear.

However in reality I couldn't live on the basic alone and although confident in my ability to sell, I didn't have the conscience to try and flog Nicklaus, Yonex or Wilson stuff to all and sundry just because it was the biggest mark-up. I would ahve wanted to try and find out about individuals needs and requirements and make a decisonor recommendation based on that. Sadly thats not the AG way
