We stumbled out of the courtesy bus bleary eyed and still a bit drunk from a 3.30 am session at the 19th hole pub in Vilamoura and jumped at the offer of buggies at €20 per person.
Check in couldn’t have been easier, I think the lady felt a bit sorry for us or was overwhelmed by the fumes, and again no handicap certificates were requested.
The Old Course is a visually stunning mature tree lined course with carpet like fairways and pristine greens and not as tight as we had expected.
The course is not long and is suited to an accurate golfer who can work the ball both ways as the greens can be blocked out by overhanging branches if the wrong side of the fairway is hit.
If you are firmly in the grip and rip it school you will find yourself playing out from under a lot of trees, there is always a shot out as the lower branches of the trees have been cut back but the gaps between the trees become smaller the closer to the green that you aim.
There are quite a few changes in elevation and you are guided round the course as the shape of the holes is defined by the trees which helps define the doglegs which are in abundance.
The course and facilities have a colonial feel and although this was the only course we had to pay for buggies and range balls it is a must play if you are in the area
