Today I had a brilliant video lesson, it was so obvious (when pointed out) what I was doing wrong with my swing, I was amazed at how good the quality was and how after seeing the videos my pro suggested a few things to work on with a review next month. However, I went out on the course and couldnt hit a flipping thing. I have to change my grip (I think quite drastically) turning my left hand clockwise and my right hand counter clockwise, which feels so weird. I am going to the range tomorrow to practice with the new grip. I also have chicken wings and collapse my left knee too much and rotate my hips too much. At impact I am in exactly the same position as address, I do however put the ball on the tee quite well. Seriously if you were ever interested in a video lesson I can whole heartedly recommend it.

The course isn't the place to practice new things, that's what the range is for. It takes thousands of balls to be a change in and can take several months. It's not uncommon to go backwards.

My advice is hit the range and practice

I had this happen after a lesson last Friday. Started pulling everything left! That's if I could hit the thing!
Got another lesson tomorrow. Aiming for a lesson a wee upto the new season in march with 2-3 trips to the range a week to practice!
Trust the pro, we are in the same boat, keep positive and you'll be hitting bombs down the fairway in no time!

My partner talks sense. I admire your willingness to get onto the course and try it but big changes like grip and body movement through the swing need time to become natural and for you to find your own natural rhythmn

Well I did two hours down the range today, I only hit 100 balls but took particular note of how I was setting up, grip, (which I still dont like but started feeling better), trying to keep my hips from turning too much (even tried the bucket between my knees), increasing my wrist break, and turning from the hips on impact, and reducing my chicken wing.

Well, on the last few shots I video recorded the swing to show my pro. I still dont break the wrists enough, but the hip rotation is much less on the back swing, and my hips are starting to drive through with some force, chicken wing is still there but much less and the swing is opening out on follow through rather than pulling the club into my body. On the whole a good practice session, enjoyed it, and hopefully the start of a much better swing. Thanks for the advice chaps, much appreciated.

It may sound a bit odd and the missus might find you've totally lost it but if you're changing your grip, keep a club in the house and practice gripping and holding the club when you're watching tv or whatever. The more often you can pick the club up the quicker it will feel natural - then all you have to do at the range is work on the other stuff :D

Funny you say this as this is what I've been doing since my first lesson last Friday. Today the pro showed me a good way to set up in a sequence so you dont forget anything, every chance I get at home or if a thought comes in to my head I'll be stood up and going through the routine!
Keep doing this and the new grip will feel natural in no time. All three grips seem quite comfy now, and I've change from the interlocking grip to the finger on top grip!

I done this last year. Too many lessons in too short a space of time. Even though I was hitting the range 4-5 times a week. Too much changes without enough time to bed each change in.

After a couple of months I was a mess. Too much going on in my head with all the changes.

I'm now back to once a month and only going back if

A) I can't seem to get the change right
B) The change has bedded in to the point where I don't have to think about it any more.

Exactly. One change at a time.

It might seem to take ages but you'll be a better player in the long run if you let things settle in before the next change.

Don't be too disheartened if it doesn't come together straight away. The grip change is a big enough thing in itself but trying to add in everything else you describe is going to take some serious range work. Personally I think there's way too much there to be able to focus on exactly what should be working when and how it should feel when you are swinging well. How long have you been using this guy?
