FC was about 6 ft from the hole today and the sun was directly behind the pin casting a perfectly straight shadow line up from the hole and past his ball. Because of this he asked me to attend the flag as he wanted to use the shadow as a guide instead of taking the pin out. I'm fairly sure there is nothing in the rules preventing this seeing as you can ask someone to attend the pin at anytime, but is anyone able to confirm?

If the flag was in it's natural position in the hole then no problem.

But it would be illegal to ask somebody to hold the flag in any other position and use its shadow to indicate the line while the stroke was being made.
Okay to point out the line with the shadow but must be moved before stroke is made.

As crow says - but my biggest concern would be hitting the flagstick! A 6ft putt isn't going to take a whole lot of time to get there...

Makes most sense to me to line up on the shadow and then have it removed before making the stroke - but that's just me :)
