Not a grey area at all. If he’s not touching/holding the putter, it is “set down” and a breach of the Rule, meaning a penalty.
I could easy see the scenario where the putter is set down as shown in the photo and the player steps back to crouch down and look down the putter shaft and handle to check the line for the putt. I can't see how the player is going to get much from continuing to hold on to the putter when set down in the way shown. In fact he's certainly not going to be able to hold the putter by the handle with marker and ball so positioned.

What on earth is that waffle supposed to mean? If he's let go of it, it's already been clarified that it's a penalty.

From a playing perspective, what sort of dipstick would do this anyway?

And don't tell me.... Does he then insist on the pin going back in before he putts?;)

I don’t understand what point you’re trying to make?

Well, he saw the pro on TV holding the shaft above the line on the ball to check where that was pointing, he defo didn't see anyone placing it on the green.
Some of my best friends are very nice and also dipsticks....Undoubtedly they say the same about me so it's not really an insult

I'm not making any point other than the poster of the scenario was unable to say whether or not the player retained hold of the putter. I was considering how he might retain hold of the putter and get advantage from doing that given how our poster demo'd how the putter was set with ball and marker.
