US Open Tennis

Just when you thought this Summer couldn't get any better for British sport up steps Andy Murray. Very well played that man, absolutely superb!!!!! I just hope that the Murray detractors are queuing up for their big bowls of humble pie with lashings of contrition cream!!!!
 
I'm knackered this morning but it was totally worth it.

Recall a thread just after the Wimbledon final in which various people said he was a bottler who just wasnt good enough to win a slam.

Well....where are you now?

This. Absolutely epic match, one of the best I've ever seen. He wasn't handed it either, he earned it outright.

Hope Lee Westwood can do the same next year to silence those same people.

For me the difference is Murray has always had the game just lacked a little mental tuffness and the bottle to play with no fear.

Westwood on the other hand would need to significantly improve his putting, chipping and mental game if he is to get there.

Anyway was an amazing performance last night and really glad i stayed up to watch it.
 
Really pleased for Andy... Must be a great feeling achieving a lifelong ambition...

Only missed about 20mins in the middle whilst driving home from work... We certainly had to go thru' the full gamut of emotions as we have to do when watching Andy play... Two guys each determined to win produced the tennis of the tournament.. Hopefully this is the first of many slam wins for Andy and encourages other Brits to raise their game...

A lot of credit must go to Ivan Lendl: he seems to have formed a great bond with Murray. Lots of joking around but then the serious stuff on the practice court. Lendl just oozes confidence and belief and some of this seems to have rubbed off on Murray.
 
Not being a huge fan of tennis, I never stayed up to watch it.But I like Murray, I like his personality and his chat, he's also a hibby, so well done Andy, you have done Scotland proud.
 
I can see Murray-Djokovic becoming THE tennis rivalry of the next 2-3 years.

Federer still plays some sublime tennis at times but when he's off he struggles with the physicality of guys like Novak/Murray. And he is getting older.

Nadal is beginning to struggle more and more with injuries.

As talented as guys like Tsonga & Berdych are they don't look like making that next step any time soon.

Think Murray will end up with 4-6 slams by the time he calls it a day and will go down as the greatest player this country has ever produced.

Great post Neddy,I agree with every word.He will be the best British player ever for sure.

This is definitely a possibility...if...IF he can stay healthy. He has next to no ankles left, so as long as the supports he wears can keep him healthy he's got a very good chance. Now he's got one, the pressure will be off him somewhat to win one.

Plus with Lendl on his side, he's a scary prospect for any opponent.
