My 'roadshagging' Zafira Breeze was serviced a while back and the garage commented on my front tyres being almost at the legally acceptable limit for the tread. So, today, I got them replaced.

I managed to get two FireStone 205/55 R16 V rating for £75 each which I thought was a right result. Seeing as I'd saved a bit of money I asked them to check the tracking. £29 for that.

I can honestly say that it's probably the best £179 I ever spent!!

It's like I'm driving a new car!! The steering is so much lighter than before - it's like I'm driving a Corsa..

It's much quieter inside as well.

It appears to be changing gear easier as well..

I'm WELL happy!!

Good news. I've been putting off getting front tyres for my Beemer.

I'm glad I did, as I found out today I'd have killed that set too in double-quick time, as the front suspension's knackered.

Blackcircles.com are amongst the better of the online tyre retailers.
You buy the tyres online and choose the workshop, date and time you want them fitted.
Well worth a look.

Cheers

Steve...

Also, it's well worth having the tyres filled with Nitrogen instead of air, loads of places do it now. Makes a massive difference in handling, noise and fuel economy.

Yep, another vote for Black Circles. Good prices, good choice and fitting locally too.

Given that our atmosphere is 78% nitrogen anyway how do you arrive at that conclusion?

...my french car with its french suspension is working fine. Just so you know :)

Utter cobbles I'm afraid. Just one of those little myths so they can bleed you out of a few more of your hard earned.

If peeps are wanting another alternative for tyres try Camskill. They are the cheapest out there (Ok, sometimes by £1) and have a hugely greater choice.

AuburnWarrior any reason you went for the Firestones?

Don't talk to me about tyres.
I get through on average a near side front every 6 months. Occupational hazard.
Damage isn't covered by the lease, only wear but it means I get a new set with about 3 months of the lease left.

Sorry to disagree with the naysayers but it is proven fact.

Have either of you actually tried it?

Formula 1 have used nitrogen for years.

I had the tyres on my new van filled with nitrogen, it reduced the roll around corners, I got an extra 3mpg and in two years had to top up the pressures twice. I did a lot of diagnostic work for a local tyre workshop so got it for free. My mums Nissan micra also has nitrogen (free) and the difference between air and nitrogen is very noticeable.

Cheers

HID had a puncture while doing 70 on the A329M last month. Turns out the front two were totally illegal and down to the cord and the back weren't great. £280 for 4 x tyres for a Fiesta plus getting the tracking done. Salutory lesson as they could have blown big time at any point and in the outside lane of a motorway it wouldn't have been worth thinking about. I was annoyed with myself and her for not checking them more often but we won't make the same mistake again

I'd like to see these facts... I really would. All you'll find is info on how tires will stay inflated at pressure and some crap about how corrisive air is inside a tyre.

F1 tires run hot, therefore need a gas inside that doesn't expand as much when heated.

The same brand tire inflated with air or nitrogen will act the same if the pressure in the air inflated tire is maintained. The air filled tire will lose pressure over time as oxygen escapes, but if the pressure is maintained there will be no difference.

Is the correct answer

When my car was serviced, the Vauxhall dealer phoned and told me that my offside rear tyre had a chunk out of the wall and that it needed replacing. They recommended Firestone. They quoted me over £100. I phoned around and got a better spec Firestone for £75 which they matched.

So, seeing as I've got a Firestone at the back I thought I'd get two Firestone's on the front.

I'm a bit weird like that.. :(

From my drive today, I'd recommend them though.

spooky, garage told me last week I have about 2 weeks left on the front tyres, £248 EACH tyre

Merry fecking Christmas:o

For the same price give or take a few pennies you could had bought a much much better performing tyre.

Firestone may be a subsidiary of Bridgestone but the difference between the two types is like night and day.
