We're off to see our daughter in Brisbane next week, but we'll be stopping of in Singapore for a weekend on the way back.
I know a lot of you have traveled a bit (I'm looking at you Tashy!), so I wondered if there any 'must see' places as well as things to avoid as it's our first time out that way?

Tia :)

We stayed in a hotel up the Singapore river - lovely and interesting walk (past Clarke Quay) down to the marina and back (you could walk the opposite way up river from the marina)
We loved the view from the top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel (didn't bother going to the more expensive bit on top). Mind - it was Chinese New Year and the fireworks were fabulous. But going just before dusk and then staying as it gets dark to see the lights of the business district tower blocks and the marina.
Raffles Hotel was still being refurbished so didn't go in. The Long Bar was open but had quite a queue so didn't bother with that.
And we ate in Chinatown so that was very interesting.

To be honest - we just enjoyed walking around - especially as there are remarkably few private cars on the roads - it being so expensive to own one in Singapore. Our walking included Fort Canning Park - that was nice...and a nice view from the top.

Night zoo looks interesting, they do a safari as well I see. Looking forward to all the street food. Might need to go on a diet when I get back. :ROFLMAO:

Lots of shopping malls you'll struggle to keep your wife out of. We bought some decent golf clothing there though! :-)

Plus 1 vote Clarke Quay

Lovely old colonial cricket ground

Singapore slings at Raffles! (has to be done!)

Lovely place, and virtually crime free -They don't mess about with the policing. More Gene Hunt than Cressida Dick! :-)

Gardens by the bay is a must, at the back of marina bay sands hotel. Book tickets to go up on the walk way. They do two lights shows to music. Purely by luck we were on the walkway when the second light show was on. Stunning. The best way to get around Singapore and the cheapest is the hop on hop off buses. A 24 hr ticket lasts 24 hrs. Not that one day. You will get to see most of the city on the various routes. You could spend two weeks going in the shopping malls. But the best by a country mile is opposite Marina bay sands hotel. It is stunningly beautiful. get off the bus there and walk straight over to the gardens after.
Like SILH we stayed up the river and had a walk down past Clarke quay. And also Robertson quay which is very touristy and a bit of a dump we thought. Further down the river on the opposite side to Clarke quay is the Chinese houses on the river front. They have happy hours there and the price of bottles of beer is the cheapest you will get. 4 dollars happy hour, 10 dollars plus normal hours. As soon as we got there we did a river cruise and loved it. very relaxing. On the bus routes, we liked China town. Little India we thought was very busy and full of rammel. One of the good bits re the buses was the maps. They are very good re the places you want to see and the routes overlap, so you can get off one and get on another knowing what time they turn up. Finally, it gets humid, very humid, take some water out with you.

All my suggestions for 'best' places already covered. Every 'attraction' is pretty much '1st Class'!

Agree about being/feeling 'herded' on the tours!

Night Zoo was/is a particular highlight.

Their Underground (MRT) is worth using to see how an Underground sh/could work! And for garden folk Gardens by the Bay is impressive too.

Great stuff guys, thank you very much. I tend not use local transport when abroad, but looks like this is a must in Singapore. :)

I can't recommend many other places that havn't been listed yet. I'm off again in March for 5 nights prior to a rest in Bali.

I assume there are no travel restrictions as of yet for the coronavirus? Last I read there was 3 cases in Singapore. Hopefully this doesn't worsen.

Agree - we didn't hang around this stretch but it was fascinating walking through as a look back to old Singapore

We also ate in a fascinating Singapore Chinese seafood restaurant - Sin Hoi Sai - on Tiong Bahru Road. A very un-fancy place at the edge of the City Centre but easy walking distance of all hotels by the Singapore river and the marina. The seafood is on 'display' in huge tanks and the kitchens are open so you can see what's going on. Very basic decor and tables - but we were the only westerners in it and lots of locals. The food was great - and the very Chinese experience was as good as what we might ever have hoped for from a restaurant.

Took me a while to acclimatise on our stopover, so beware the heat and humidity.
Am sure everyone has already mentioned my recommendations.
Gardens by the bay, marina bay sands hotel, botanic gardens, changi prison, zoo nightime safari, Raffles for a gin sling (if it's open again now)

As foxy mentioned, when we went back from the gardens we used the MRT to get back to our hotel. Very cheap and excellent

I suppose it’s all down to taste when it comes to Cities in respect of what does and does not tick boxes. But for me Kuala Lumpar ticked a fair few boxes. We were informed that Singapore is light years ahead. Don’t get me wrong there is aspects of Singapore that quite frankly are stunning. Surprised no one has mentioned the terminal ( shopping centre ) at the airport, well worth a few hours. But there are parts of Singapore we saw that are a dump. The places mentioned are places to visit.
PS. If you buy anything of value check re claiming back your tax at the airport.
