Just took the boy out,we only go to houses if they've got pumpkins in the window or decorations.

This. Unless the house is displaying something to make it look like they welcome trick and treaters then we walk past. Plenty round our way with decorations/pumpkins/lights that we don't need to bother those without them.

Trick or treating is a rubbish American import, I will not answer the door to them, what happened to remember, remember the 5th of November and Penny for the Guy?

Unfortunately louise the origins of trick or treat is a British and Irish idea that started in the 16th century. Though yup you are correct that it is the Yanks that have commercialised it. In early Nov 2001, me Missis T and kids went to Florida. Called into a supermarket for some bits and bobs, all the Halloween gear and sweets were massively on sale.the kids went mental for the sweets.

Only the name is an American import. It has been going on in Scotland for much longer than I can remember (I was doing it 70 years ago) under the name of "guising".

Well living in a village I had about 60 or 70 kids come to the door ( I'm sure they drive in from local places) but it was great seeing all the little Draculas and witches having a great time!!

Ran out of sweets after a swarm of about 25 kids arrived at once.

I think Haloween is far too commercialised now, but the kids really loved tonight - great fun.

No tricks thank goodness.

we are a bit out the way so don't often get any.

but one year we did, so gave the little darlings an apple each. I had just picked a load from the orchard to take to work the next day.

the look of disappointment on there faces was priceless.... worth it even if i did have to pick most of them up from the end of the driveway where the kids had thrown them the next day:clap:

Well I was guising only 50yrs ago - but yes - so very different it seems back then - and fun for all. Well at least the adults and folk we visited seemed to enjoy having us in to do our 'turn'. My brother and I would recite or sing a bit of Burns - and one year we sang Edelweiss from SoM :)

Started at 6pm, last one done at 7.15. I have halloween music playing outside from 5.30 a blow up pumpkin and ghost lights up. The costumes get better each year. Gave one girl short shrift when she turned up with a mate and hadn't made any effort....I don't think so luv.

Quite enjoy Halloween and the trick or treating thing. Mrs C likes decorating outside the house, I'll watch several Simpson's House of Horror specials and Jr will rake in the sweets. Staged our own horror flick last night when Chucker minor sliced his finger peeling an apple and we ended up in A&E...

My youngest went to a primary school halloween disco for an hour and a half, all the kids dressed up, all had fun in the dry and warm, probably better than wandering the streets in the dark trying to mooch sweets off strangers. As a parent happier they do that.

I did guising as a kid and it was all about 'the stash of sweets and money' not entertaining the old biddies along the road with a party piece which is wrong I know but that's kid thinking isn't it! Nobody ever wanted monkey nuts, just toffos and wham bars, what a faff shelling those awful things.

Never did anything when I was a kid (late 60's/early 70's) apart from the "mischievous night" mentioned by someone earlier. No dressing up, no going around houses etc. Nowadays it's all just the commercialised American influence that has spawned a whole industry in the last 20/30 years it seems. The grandkids enjoy it but I can't say I've any real enthusiasm for the whole thing.

By far the bigger event was Bonfire Night (never "Guy Fawkes night" btw). We used to spend all half term collecting wood/rubbish to build our bonfire on spare ground and each group of kids would try to build the biggest and weren't averse to a bit of theft from each others making it vital to defend your bommie at all times. Mind you that's in the days when you could buy your own fireworks, set them off where you liked, were allowed to light fires without fire engines and ambulances being in attendance. Not saying it's right because there used to be inevitable accidents etc but I did enjoy those times. Great childhood memories.

I think it has worked really well around where I live. If you put a pumpkin outside your house, then you are telling the kids that they can knock and you have sweets. The kids dress up and go round with their parents and everyone has a good laugh.

Yes you will always get some little scrotes who try and ruin it for everyone but I'd far rather see that than an appallingly bad fireworks display at a local football club where people's safety was secondary to how much money they could get out of you.

I went to a cracking Halloween party though where fancy dress was mandatory. One guy thought it would be funny to go as Greg Louganis so had fake blood over his head and speedos. And that was it. Which would have been OK as he is pretty fit so has the body to carry it off. But then one girl decided to start flashing her underwear at him and sure enough, the speedos did not quite cover up his interest. Classic.

When I was a kid there was none of this trick or treat rubbish, which seems to be an American import. We did celebrate Halloween, but only with toffee apples and apple bobbing. Bonfire night was much more important then! Last year some kiddies came knocking on my door asking for trick or treat. I said trick and they then admitted that they hadn't got one! Gave them some sweets anyway. I must be a soft touch!

Do a Youtube search for Jimmy Kimmel and his Halloween candy pranks. He's an American chat show host who gets parents to film themselves telling their kids they've eaten all their candy. You really shouldn't laugh at the reactions but you can't help yourself.
