I've just been reading about Elsham GC near Forest Pines GC. They have just started using the Traffic light system on their flags.
If the flag is red, it's at the back.
Yellow for middle
Green for front.
So simple even ..........(enter favourite knob's name) can understand it.

:)

We use a similar scheme but keep it golf related.

Whites are at the back
Yellow in the middle
Red at the front

Just like a normal teeing area.

Simples.

Blue back, white middle, red front. Been doing it for ages. I cannot see any reason why all golf courses should not do this. I also can't see why it is taking so long to filter down.

That's what we do. Only problem is when we play a big comp we have club flags which are all white. Usually takes me 9 holes to realise.:(

I also don't understand why this isn't common practice. It's so frustrating playing on a course and not knowing where the pin is situated. My course does the the same as murphthemog's (because its the same course!)...

we use the Red/Yellow/White system, and it works great ... unless the greenkeeper forgets to swap the colour and just moves the hole !!!

My course doesn't do this which is quite annoying!

Our greens are fairly small but even still there are a number of holes where you can't tell where the pin is from the tee or fairway. Often I hit what I think is a great shot to be 30ft either short or long......

We're the same as Aztec's, white, yellow and red. Sometimes you could question the colour but I've only ever seen it bad once.

My mate had SkyCaddie. White flag so he hit enough club to reach the back, and just trickled over for an easy chip back. I had a laser. Hit my shot and missed left. His was a much better shot than mine but when we got there the flag should have been yellow, or probably red.
I was pin high and he was 25yds away!

I played the oxfordshire a few weeks back, and they print out the pin position with yardage on the back of the scorecard!

We use the white back, yellow middle, red front setup but they also used to be in sequence so if the first was yellow then the second would be white, third red and so on which I was never a fan of as in comps they always put the pin at the back on one so every hole played to the same flag in every comp. I can see why they did this because it did mean the pins were in the toughest spots on most of the holes but a bit a variety would be nice.

Because of the moss issue we stopped doing that so we could protect the the worst couple of greens. I'm hoping our new course manager won't revert back to this but I suspect it comes from the comittee so we'll have to see.

We have a holey ball thing on our pins so front is at the bottom, middle in the middle and back is at the top of the flagstick.

I heard a tale though that one of the seniors was a bit OCD and it bugged him that they weren't all dead centre so he moved them!

Why wouldn't you just use the GPS screen in the buggy for an exact yardage, pin placement, slope & gradient info! :D

We don't have that option. However, playing at Orange Lake last year I did have that option but two buggies side by side in the fairway gave 15yds difference to the front of the green - and both were different to my bushnell so I wouldn't trust it even if it were available

This can happen when one cart is driven by a woman & the other by a bloke ;)

We used to have those balls on the flag.

But I was told they were removed because some people would move them after they'd finished the hole so's to make it harder for following groups to beat them in comp's.

Whether it's true or not I couldn't be certain.

I like it at places like Carden Park, the card shows each green split into 3 or 4 sectors and you are told at the start of the round that you are using sector A,B,C or D that way you always no the area in which the pin will be.
