Traditional or modern?

If you're playing with bog standard, ordinary, non-name clubs because you can't afford Ping/Callaway/TM etc then you possibly can't afford one. As soon as you pay in excess of £100 for a club then you can. IF YOU CHOOSE TOO.

Accuracy of the GPS isn't quite as important as you may think. If your gps says its 150 yards to the front and you hit a 7 iron and it finishes at the front of the green then the fact that it may be 140 or 155 yards doesn't matter. Next time you get 150 yards to the middle you'll reach for your 7 iron.

Any means of aquiring the yardage doesn't hit the shot for you. Any means of aquiring the yardage gives you just that - the yardage. You can then be sure that you're using the right club. Confidence in knowing your yardage can't be bad.
All a gps does is provide it quicker.

So what your saying is you have bought the device for anywhere from £50-£250 to quicken up a round. May as well save up a bit and purchase a buggy :P

If so....
where's the issue...? So what?
Personally I have a laser - I find more use for it. Many holes on our course are uphill or have mounds in front making it tricky to see the base of the flag and therefore judge distance. I have had a gps but recently swapped to the laser.

I'm fed up with the GPS is cheating/lazy/onlyforthewealthy/againstthespiritofthegame (*delete as appropriate) rant.
As long as there is a local rule in place, they are legal to use. If you don't want to, then don't. Your choice.
But don't have a go at those that choose to.
Its exactly the same as Scott McCarron calling Big Phil a cheat when he used the Ping wedge with box grooves a while back - technically it was within the rules - get over it.

If they ain't gonna ban Brooms and Bellys then DMD's are going nowhere either.

Get used to it.

Totally agree Leftie. Any time i've played with someone who has a gps it's been stuck to their bag and has given an instant reading, hence i'll get one soon.

Bizarrely at our place there are the usual 150, 100 markers etc but there are a few , like on the 2nd that have a marker at 86 yards, and some at 97 yards. All very weird distances.

Well said.

We have a 150 on our 11th hole. Skycaddie says it's 162, and I play it as 162. It's hard enough to get on the green (452 yards) without the "help" of a 150 marker that has been moved SO many times over the years, it's 12 yards out.

Also, when you get "lost" on my course in a place you've never been, it saves time.

I sliced a ball onto another fairway today and had no shot to speak of. All I knew was I had to try and lay up short of a pond, take 2 more to get on and try and escape with a bogey 6. Skycaddie said 105 to the pond, so I whacked my GW at it, coming up just short of the water. This shot was diagonally across the course, but GPS doesn't know that.

6 iron up the par 5, 112 to get on, got it to 8 foot. Didn't make the putt, but at least I was getting on with it and not holding folk up. I've seen people trying to go up the entire length of the adjacent hole and all sorts, taking 10 shots and 20 minutes.

I think you get my drift. :)

Was merely stating the fact of cost to time factor it depends how seriously you want to take the game. I enjoy the game how it is I dont feel the need to be so precise in a game I am doing for fun not for personal gain.

If I was serious about trying to go pro then maybe I would have one to get my shots exact but golf is for fun for me.

Cheating - I dont think anyone can say its cheating as its within the rules.

Lazy - yeah it is a bit to be honest, takes a key part of thinking out of the game.

Confidence boosting - yeah it is, if you know what you hit each club then you will have confidence its the right club rather than being inbetween clubs as you are not 100% accurate on distance so theres a bit more pressure on having the right club.

only for the wealthy - its more a luxury item than a needed item in most cases. just think the money that can be spent on them could be better used.

against the spirit of the game - linked to rules really it cant be if its in the rules.

seperate point here about gps, if you and your playing partner have different versions of gps are they normally exactly the same or has anyone had any instances where they are way off each other? Thing is with technology something always goes wrong eventually is there any lifespan on these devices?
