Just watched Phil Mickelson smash his tee shot on the par 3 12th hole straight into the crowd and not even a hint of a shout of fore as he watched it all the way!!!!

This is happening more often than not and is pissing me off

I know it's etiquette and they should shout but playing devils advocate, how many times has a shout of fore actually stopped someone getting hit. Especially in a crowd of people 10 deep?

Don't get me wrong, I always shout fore when required but does it actually achieve anything?

I would have thought that when you hear someone shouting fore you generally turn away from the direction of the call thus you would get struck somewhere on the back part of the body rather than on the front part....I know which side I would prefer.

The other big thing that got me was neither Mickelsons playing partner Jason Day or either caddie also didnt bother to shout!!!!!!

Although they should shout, are the crowd not there to watch the play? If they are watching should they be able to see the ball - ok not always but the events I've been to I can track the ball from the tee to the green.

There should be some warning given though - without doubt.

They don't shout fore in the hope that it hits the crowd and therefore stops the ball going even further out of play.

Tiger hit a wide tee shot on one hole yesterday, and Darren Clarke indicated with his arm in which direction the ball was heading. Not a shout as such, but at least some kind of effort to show the ball was heading towards the crowd.

I wonder if the practice of not shouting "fore" has arisen because
a) They don't want to be shouting when another player on an adjacent hole is at the top of their backswing and
b) With players on every hole, if you aren't watching play and you hear "fore right" would spectators really know which tee/fairway/direction the ball was coming from.

Also of course they may feel that as they are highly paid sporting mega stars shouting "fore" like a club hacker may be beneath them.

Don't know, just wondering. :D

Good points Mashie never really thought of it like that, but it does make a bit of sense I suppose.

I've heard plenty of pro's shouting fore, unfortunately it's the ones you don't see that people remember

I don't think the issue of shouting and putting someone off on an adjacent hole would come into it. There are usually cheers all around the course as someone plays a great shot or makes birdie anyway. I'd like to see the ruling made mandatory on tour. We've all seen spectators injured in the crowd and frankly a signed ball or glove isn't really much in the way of compensation. At least give the crowd a chance to duck
