So....

I was looking at a driver on eBay
3 bids, £94.51 with less than 1 minute to go, I even have a screenshot....
driverscam1.gif

So with 3 seconds to go I enter my bid of £115

Then it says "Enter a bid of £214 or more"

So I look again and the bidding has gone up to £214 with only one more bid placed :D

OK, so no big deal, then I take a look at the bidding history....

There were flippin' bids from about 5 DAYS AGO for £189.00 and £209.15 :D :D :D

Any explaination appreciated as I'm a bit miffed by it :p

I think its because other bidders bids are hidden so until you bid they wont be shown. You probably left it a bit late to bid, my tip would be to bid with 10 mins to go and that gives you enough time to conteract any other bids. Hope this has helped you.

Not sure, but you could have had one for £125 on here a couple of weeks back.....but I bagged it!!! ;)

Yep I saw it. It wasn't any good to me as the one you got has a shaft made out of rubber :D :D ...and would probably cost a further £90+ to replace for an X-flex.

Out of interest did you get the i-mix spanner for shaft changing if you need to?

Perhaps the reason the numbers weren't shown initially were because the bidders had put in a 'maximum bid' figure which wouldn't have been needed until someone put in a higher one ?

Yes, I thought something like that might be the case HOWEVER whilst I was watching the price it jumped up from £89 to £94.51 with 20minutes to go, I can't see how it could do that if there were already bids in from 5 days previous?

It makes no sense to me whatsoever and I feel like I've been ripped off without spending any money :) I suppose it did cost me an hour of flicking backwards and forwards checking the price and remaining time.

True on the shaft, but Ithink the missus managed to pick up a ZCOM Pro stiff for 40 quid for an XMAS pressie, but yes, hindsight is a wonderful thing. It didn't come with the wrench, but I've got one on order.

It could be one of those bid snipe things, where it waits until the final few seconds before putting in the bid. I am guessing that if 2 or more people use it it would show there bid then the person who had bid more.

Midnight...

I think it makes sense (of a sort)

The price will have gone up from £89 following Bidder 1's first bid (why he subsequently increased 2 hours later who knows). It won't have moved from that until the 7th and Bidder 2's small bid, which is automatically outbid bu Bidder 1's higher limit - so at that point it's going up by £2 a time.
I'm guessing you're not Bidder 3 so you and he put in almost simultaneous bids, and were presumably told you needed to bid more as you're automatically being outbid by Bidder 1. Bidder 3 puts in (an)other bid(s) until he wins - going up by £5 a time now.

Its simple, Bidder1 when placing his first bid has the choice to enter a Maximum Bid for the item... So lets just say the most he would pay would be £209... So everytime a new bidder comes in and enters an amount less than £209, BIDDER1 will still be the winning bid as nobody has offered more than his maximum bid!

So looking at this item and previous experiences from Ebay, I would say Bidder1 was the seller, just to confuse the issue... :D :D :D

If you want to avoid this confusion, get Snipe. This is an add-on from Firefox and allows you to set your maximum bid but Snipe will hold it until the last few seconds. If your max is higher than the others you will win. Keep a watch on it and you will see the ultimate winning bid if not yours.

Nah, in my expierience Shill Bidders don't put in a massive bid right near the start.

Did happen to me once though, when I was trying to get a set of clubs. Me and "bidder 2" were having a bit of a price-war. I'd place a bid, day later he would, and so on. Got to the point where I wasn't going to go any higher.

Just before the auction ended, "bidder 2" emailed me to say, "By the way, a putter's included in the sale too". 'Hang on', I thought, 'how does the other bidder know what's included and why is he telling me?'. I checked bidder 2's previous auctions, lots of golf stuff, lived in the same town as the seller of the golf gear I'd been bidding on!! So this git was Shill Bidding on his own stuff with two IDs, and stupidly emailed me from the wrong one about the putter. Idiot. I should have reported him.

Bidder 1 was the first bidder on the 2nd of Nov at that time his max bid would have been somthing like £92 then someone out bid him. after this ebay would as bidder one if they wanted to up there bid which bidder 1 did but left untill the last minute on the 7th Nov however becuse he is only increasing his bid not making a new one it is dated to the orginal bid on the 2nd, but then some else out bit him at the last minute with there first bid on the 7th. confusing i know but i hope that helps

Or, more likely, Bidder 3 was the seller, forcing the price right up high at the very end, and then probably giving Bidder 1 a second-chance offer at £209 rather than £117, or whatever it would've ended at.
