Was dead chuffed to see Tom Watson win the Senior Open Championship at the weekend. Is there a better example of a true golfer? He has been my hero since I was a boy. Unassuming, well-mannered and with a deep respect for the game. And boy, can he still play. He wandered around the hospitality area without any airs and graces and happily smiled at everyone and signed autographs. I can see why he is regarded with such affection, especially here in Scotland.

Went down to Muirfield on Friday to watch him play and practice. In spite of Tony Johnstone claiming that the wind was "30-40mph" it was actually 10-15mph all day at most. Average East Lothian wind. He played lovely knock down shots all day. Learnt a lot.....and not just about how to play in the wind. Well done, Tom. Well deserved.

I couldn't watch that last hole - thought he was going to through it away like the US Open a couple of weeks back. I agree though great to see Watson still winning. And what a great golf swing still!

If he could putt like he used to he could still contend on the main tours. He had a realistic chance of winning the Open in 2003 right up till pretty near the end.

I agree with you John_Findlay. TV pundits are always going on about bad weather, particularly when in Scotland. It was ridiculous at Carnoustie. The BBC must have put thousands off coming to the event by continuously harping on about how cold and miserable it was.

Watson is one of my heroes - I was given his book - "getting up and down" as a prize in my school speech day and it really inspired me to get seriously into golf

Surely Watson must be one of the greatest links golfers of all time, with his Open and Seniors Open record?

Not sure who would run him close - any ideas?

A real gent as well

Tom Watson really earned my respect at Hoylake 2006 . when most golfers left the tee they all walked centre fairway, focused , looking straight ahead. But the great man always walked the fairway just inside the ropes , smiling , saying hello to anybody , thanking fans for their comments. A truly nice guy
