to make one basic mistake is forgiveable but to make two in the same round.

Even though I did it 2 weeks ago, I again marked my ball on the fringe today To make things worse two holes later after hitting a lovely approach to just short of the green I chipped to a couple of feet only to then realise I had played another girls ball. They were both close together but I really should have checked.
Had those to not signing my card last week and am beginning to wonder what's wrong with me!

It's a DNA thing and will only get worse.
Don't worry too much I managed the same mistake TWICE in the same round yesterday.
Played at Tehidy yesterday in a CGU comp representing my home club with the mens captain playing a foursomes comp.
Hitting driver on the 4th which is 287 yard dogleg to the left par 4 which is a bit downhill. Aimed my driver at the bunker 40 yards to the right of the green but pulled my drive left which took a chunk out of the oak tree protecting the green. Expecting to find our ball short of the green in the rough, again, ( we only managed to hit 3 fairways all day) but as we walked down towards the green we see a ball sitting proudly in the middle of the green. Oops!
On the 16th, a 337 yard par 4 with a bunker right across the front of the green, I took the driver again thinking "No way can I make it too that bunker 325 yards away" while one of the group in front was just raking over from playing his shot. WRONG!
Hit the sweetest drive I have for a while and noticed the chap looking at something in the bunker and looking back towards us. As we walked down the fairway we saw a ball in the middle and thought it was ours as our opponents had driven into the trees but it was theirs and ours had run into the bunker about 5 yards from the guy. Another apology later.........
Sat chatting with them afterwards and they seemed as surprised as we were that I had got it that far!

I could ask, are you blonde? But I won't. Seriously, I think the problem is that a round of golf lasts 4 hours or more & it's impossible to concentrate for that amount of time. In a friendly game the other week I marked my ball, picked it up, then picked up the marker! These lapses in concentration extend into the playing of shots & deciding how shots should be played. More often than I like I find myself saying after a shot "why didn't I check the wind direction?" "Why didn't I hit the putt harder when I knew it was uphill" etc. etc. I can't think of a recent round where a lapse of concentration didn't cost me at least one shot. If anyone can suggest how to maintain concentration, or turn it on & off at will, I'd be interested to hear.

It's a concentration issue whenever I've blundered like that! I've now got something of a routine that hopefully 'prevents' repeats, but there's always potential! I can't remember ever marking on the fringe though. That may be because I think 'Green missed' or 'Not a counter for Putts', so unconsciously know not to mark.

Forgotten to sign Card once and forgotten whether I had a couple of other times! Concentration again, but also highlighted a little of a fitness/tiredness/fluids issue, so now try to keep fluid levels up over last few holes.

I've played a wrong ball a few times but quite the worst was in a 4bbb winter league match and my ball was on the fairway after a decent drive, I not only played a wrong ball a few feet from my own but I also picked, cleaned and placed it !!

I've done that twice in Board comps! (Marking ball on fringe)
And one of them was the Club championship in July so no excuse that we had just come off winter rules!

Now if I see my ball is on fringe, I consciously put my hand behind my back to stop myself from marking it!

Oh dear. What can I say. I can understand playing the wrong ball. I've done that myself but the marking of the ball on the fringe twice isn't funny
I can't understand playing the wrong ball.
Every ball I play with, even pick ups, is marked in a similar fashion.

So much so, that if I have to play an unmarked ball, it doesn't feel like mine!
