So after coming back to gold after a while out I surprised myself after a few visits to the driving range. Hitting most shots sweet and pretty straight. My range has a selection of pins to aim for with the distances to each one, I have a rough idea how far I hit each of my clubs so thinking of trying to aim for pins rather than just aimlessly hitting 60 balls at a time as far as possible. Can anyone give any drills I could use to practice this? or is it just a case of aiming for each flag and adjusting your power accordingly?

If i say hit a 7i 150yrds 6i 135 yrds and a flag is 140 away whats the best way to go about getting there? I can't imagine doing your full swing but slowing down on the downward section of your shot is going to be easy or the right way to go? so is it better to keep the same rhythm/tempo and do a slightly short swing?

Thanks

Danny

Have a look on here for Bobmac, in his signature he has a link for the VEasy, it's a training aid that really helps with alignment ( or it has with mine) really worth a look.

That makes absolutely no sense.

Are you having trouble with direction or distance control?

Just recently started playing again, so I've just been at the range for the last 2 weeks getting back into the 'swing' of things. But as I seem to be hitting the ball quite well, I thought it would be a better use of time to try and have some structure to my practice and aim for the flags on the range. After all on the course you don't just lump every shot as far as possible :) I tend to hit most shots fairly straight. Was just looking for some advice on how people control the distance if you are looking to hit in between clubs

In theory, gripping the club an inch or 2 further down the grip should lose you around 5 yards with the same swing.

If you want to control distance with your swing, I always swing shorter with the same tempo/rhythm/speed rather than trying to swing softer (which leads - in my case - to losing my timing and/or decelerating into the ball).

I really wouldn't worry too much about being that precise with distance control from 150 yards. If your club is bang on distance then happy days. If it's 5 short or 5 big then you are 15 feet away.....again happy days. If it's more than that then you had the wrong club. Much better strategy is to concentrate on consistent swing speed and being consistent for distance with each club rather than fiddling with hitting it 5 yards less/more.

Out on the course there are a couple of rules I have if I'm between clubs.

Pick the club that puts you further away from the trouble ie. trouble at the front = pick the longer club.
Pick the club that puts you closer to the centre of the green ie. pin at the back = pick the shorter club.

Finally, it's not the end of the world to be slightly long or slightly short. It can mess up your swing trying to take some off or hit one hard, but if you play your normal shot and it's 5yds too long you only have a 15' putt. I'd take that every day of the week and twice on Sundays :)

Damn these slow fingers! ;)
