tiger withdraws

Because he pulled the "I'll be back ... oh no, wait, not quite yet" stunt a few times too often this year? He should be more professional than that. He should know when he is ready to come back (and own up to the fact that even if he is all healed out, it might take a few missed cuts until he is back in competition form as well. Some things you can't prepare for through practice alone.)

Why are people so disrespectful to the greatest golf to walk the planet? Who single handedly brought the game into the 21st century

This ^^^^^

I was by no means a fan when he was winning everything and went through a stage when it was a case of anyone but Tiger to win the majors but I agree. His presence in the game would only enhance it so the ill-feeling toward him seems churlish bearing in mind how long he's not been around.

As I said in the he's' back thread, I think he's done. I hope I'm wrong, but the longer he waits the more catching up he has to do. I also think him going to the Ryder Cup showed where he really needs to be and he's clearly not there.

He's basically a young man considering Jack won his last major at the age of 46 and looking at the level and the way they swing today...well. Look at Jason and Justin, both out for weeks, the modern big hitting swing of todays golfers is time restricted if you ask me.

there must be tour players hearing this news thinking "what a joke, I've gone through bigger surgeries than this" tigers problem is obvious in his mind. imo he's too worried about hacking it around on a world stage. we all saw his chipping yips

Seems to me that the nail is well and truly hammered home....
As Crossfield said last night, if everyone pulled out when the were playing crap nobody would ever play again....

I'd put him in the top 3 but, arguably, not the greatest. I think until, or should that be if, he beats Jack's record he's not the greatest. I'd further qualify that with the host of names that picked up Majors in Jack's time clearly suggests he had stiffer competition.

And as for coming back after injury/surgery, that's got to be Ben Hogan post-accident.

BTW, I'm not a Woods hater. I want him back playing, preferably as close to his best as he can achieve.

You could also argue most wins Brian.

Woods (79) Would have to pass Sam Sneads 82 wins to claim that mantle.

Personally, I can't see him winning another 4 times.

He has definitely delivered under far far greater presure than Jack could have faced and I think that is the problem now he is under pressure to come out and be Tiger when he may need to be Matt Jones or Russell Henley for a few months.

And that is why I think it won't happen
Mentally I don't think can, or wants to, be an also-ran Journeyman, making a few cuts but spending most weekends at home.
He needs to contend and if he can't - like now - he won't come back.
Time will tell.

I don't think he did have greater pressure. If you watched a Major in the late 60's and well into the 70's, and it had Watson, Player, Trevino up the leader board with Jack you had a battle. They were all capable of posting good scores in the white hot heat of a Major on the final day, e.g. '77 Open.

When Tiger got up there, even those close to him would quite often fold. He shear presence won him many titles but only because those around him didn't have the bottle.

I meant pressure from the media and outside of Golf on the course Tiger just beat people.

I suspect his medical team have patched up his back and knee sufficiently (against tough odds given the stresses of the modern swing already pointed out) but his greatest battle will be with himself in terms of motivation and confidence. 50:50 whether he makes it. I hope he does.

I don't think the media will allow him just to play they will deem that a failure there would be week after week of the end of Tiger's stories in the paper.

Why am I not surprised by Tiger's withdrawals. I can't believe that it can take over a year to recover from surgey, and allegedly he has the chipping yips! He's probably finished as a golfer!
