Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

Well I have booked an eye test for Tuesday 27th Jan (my birthday present from the Missus) but have to go back in the following day to have another one hour consultation with the specialist who deals with contact lenses.
He will run through the various options available to me, possibly giving me a few to try and will show me how to use them properly.
Fingers (and eyes) crossed
Thanks again for all of the information, a great help.

Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

Just an update.

I had my eye test last week, and went down today to see the contact lens specialist. Was there for about an hour while he ran through the various options with me and ran a few tests. He then said he was going to pop a couple in to try them.....

Bloody hell, I couldn't believe the difference! I didn't realise they were going to be so thin and once in I hardly knew they were there. It was great being able to read every line of the eye test chart without having my glasses on. After explaining the best way to remove them he then asked me to have a go at trying to get them out again.... and this is where the fun began. I managed to get the left one out OK but try as I might I couldn't get the right one to shift. I ended up making my right eye sore as I tried for about 5 minutes or more to get the blooming thing out. In the end, he removed it for me and another appointment has been made for Friday morning to give me the chance to have another go at fitting and removing them. I am astounded that they made so much difference.
The only downer is that because I wear varifocals, my distance vision is spot on with the lenses he tried, but my close vision is still not perfect. He explained that he could try various options, "robbing Peter to pay Paul" as he put it, to find the best of both worlds but he ran a couple of tests to show me how giving me slightly better close vision would lose a little bit of the distance side of things.
I mainly need the lenses to help me complete score cards, identify my ball that sort of thing, so am willing to trade a little distance for closer work. He said that some people wear one lens for distance and the other for reading, mono something or another so I may go this route. All in all a very eye opening day (ha ha ha!! ) and if I can get used to putting them in and taking them out again I will definitely be going the lens route.
Thanks for all of your valuable advice

Re: Thinking of contact lenses. Pros and cons????

I wore "permanent" lenses for 10 years, and then one day....I couldn't do them any more.

I have tried (every few years or so) to get some trial lenses and still cannot wear them.

I wish I knew why......

In the last 2 years of wear - 1995-96, I only used lenses for Golf or Snooker....that was ok. In those days, disposables worked out far more costly.

If I could buy 52 pairs (disposable) for the price of one long-term pair, and wear them once or twice a week, I'd be very happy.

Sadly, I don't see things changing, and recently have struggled with close vision too....I think I'm doomed actually.
