Looking to hit a weekend before the next batch of the school holidays. Anyone had experience of the hotels? The kids are 5 and 3 so we won't be using the major rides. Is the place any good? Any discount codes known to man? Should I even contemplate such a trip?

Great theme park and you can easily pick up 241 offers. Why not play the Belfry while you are down this way or do Drayton Manor theme park the day after as it has Thomas Land which is perfect for kids.

I've not been there for some years now as both my boys are now in their mid twenties, but I would think your kids are a bit on the young side and you wouldn't be getting value for money.

Cant speak for Alton Towers but if you havent been yet I recommend Legoland (Windsor) and/or Paultons Park (outside Bournemouth) as they're both great theme parks for the younger ones. Might be a bit of trek down south thats the only thing.

Theres Chessington World of Adventures and Thorpe Park in this neck of the woods as well but like Alton Towers possibly aimed at the slighter older kids.

They do offer deals, hey have themed rooms and a very good indoor water "park". I believe they also offer babysitting services, so I would say its a good option. My oldest 2 are the same age as yours and I would take mine... They did euro disney last summer and loved it, Alton towers will g et a weekend visit this year from us!

Drayton manor is better for kids, it has thomasland which is EPIC lol my three year old went in September and even though it was raining, LOVED IT

Alton towers is very very large and is tiring to trek around for an adult let alone a child. The rides aren't very child friendly either with most being aimed at adrenaline junkies.

If you are going I suggest going to the splash landings hotel as the rooms are themed as beaches, but the main hotel is also brilliant. Lots of travel lodges etc nearby though if you're on a budget.

You could always come to blackpool, we have the pleasure beach, tussauds, the tower, sea life centre...great for families . Plus plenty of golf courses. You could stay at the de vere and get a round in n the morning before going out.

If you are going Alton towers, ring up to book and tell them you work for a local authority and quote code "LADDiscounts" to get upto 45% off tickets and stays. (Perks of being a govt employee for once"
