Things I learned today

Regarding NO 2.

When I were a lad I was playing a bounce game. A couple of holes behind us was Ryder Cup player John Panton...one of my heros.

Another thing I only learned since joining down here in East Lothian- from Wikipedia

"In common with Arnold Palmer, Panton had a beverage named after him in his home country. A
John Panton is a non-alcoholic drink consisting of ginger beer mixed with a dash of lime cordial."[SUP]

Its pretty popular among the members on a hot day.

I agree with Hawkeye's thoughts apart from the first one. Not sure some of these guys need to be taken as long as they do and it's perhaps something that has filtered down from the elite amatuer game via the pro ranks and the mini tours. Aside from that, it's great to look at them. Great for the club too to hold such a great event

It's similar to the big amateur event at my place.

I just meant it was interesting what you'd noticed that you could probably observe in the weekly comp.

Watched it at mine last year, likely will again this year, and I noticed things like how high they hit long irons/fairways, how good their distance control with wedges was, how confidently/aggressively they hit the ball round the greens.

Things I wouldn't see from chompers like myself!

Think it's a couple of weeks off at my place, probably try and get down to watch again if the weathers nice.

It's a fair point, I guess it was just the fact that every player was a plus handicap so I saw a lot of them one after the other without hackers like me mixed in. I agree re: distance control with short irons, that was something else I picked up on.

On a side note, it seems the course won yesterday: out of 72 players over 36 holes there were only 5 rounds under par.

3) it would be much easier to play golf if I could hit the ball further then I do.

Not sure I agree,.. if you can't control the ball.
Have seen several scratch golfers who hit the ball far less than forum distances.

Not that I'm saying you are a liar pants on fire...... :p
