I spent a couple of hours this afternoon sitting in the sun watching the Selbourne Salver at Blackmoor and I learned a few things...

1) Many of the guys I watched took a ridiculous amount of time to play their shots.

2) Really good players sometimes hit really bad shots, but they generally recover from them really well.

3) it would be much easier to play golf if I could hit the ball further then I do.

4) If the wind stays as it is, tomorrow's comp is gonna be carnage.

Good luck tomorrow Hawkeye! I joined last week and the Sec couldn't register me in time to play in tomorrows comp.
Here's hoping you play well! Let's get a game soon
Cheers

You could have learned this watching any comp at the club I'd guess?

Which of those was the biggest surprise to you?

Blimey. You've got enough +players to have a competition for them?? Our one bloke would win it every time. But would be a bit lonely.

Selbourne Salver is a prestigious open around these parts, and many players will be here and making it a whole weekend by playing the Hampshire Hog at North Hants today.

Possibly, but all of these guys were plus handicaps, many between +3 and +5, I don't get to see guys that good very often.

It's similar to the big amateur event at my place.

I just meant it was interesting what you'd noticed that you could probably observe in the weekly comp.

Watched it at mine last year, likely will again this year, and I noticed things like how high they hit long irons/fairways, how good their distance control with wedges was, how confidently/aggressively they hit the ball round the greens.

Things I wouldn't see from chompers like myself!

Think it's a couple of weeks off at my place, probably try and get down to watch again if the weathers nice.

Regarding NO 2.

When I were a lad I was playing a bounce game. A couple of holes behind us was Ryder Cup player John Panton...one of my heros.

The guy I was playing with pointed him out and said what a fabulous striker of a golf ball he was, especially long iron shots..
We stood and watched him hit about a 3 iron into a par 5...........full top.

PS It is always good for your golf to watch top amateurs play.......shame so many club golfers don't.
