They have a history of this.
Post 1945, after having supported and armed Ho Chi Min in his fight against the Japanese, Ho asked for US recognition of Vietnam, something that was recommended by the CIA of the time. (You need to bear in mind that the French in what was then Indochina actively co-operated with the Japanese and handed over Allied aircrew to them.)
Instead they allowed themselves to be 'encouraged' by the French to support them - then when France was beaten . . .
