If that is an "official" response then in poor taste imo. Hopefully not as Smith has been quite remorseful and aware he faces potential further action from the academy. This feels like throwing fuel on the fire but I expect nothing less from the odious idiot that is Rock

And yet Harvey Weinstein and Roman Polanski were never banned despite being guilty of far worse things than slapping Chris Rock for making a poor joke. Mel Gibson also guilty of some poor behaviour but also never banned.

If Smith had punched Rock at the after party, or somewhere else, I'm sure no action would have been taken.
However, he did it at the event. The Oscars committee are simply reacting because 1. They've been put under pressure to do so, and 2. The incident took the focus away from the other winners.
I wonder how many people still think it was staged?
