The Open regional qualifying

Two pros from my club entered. One birdied the last to qualify, the other bogeyed the last to drop into the play off and missed out. Fine margins.

I was having a look at some of the scoring of my local course. Some truly shocking scores but granted in really tough conditions. I'm convinced I would've beaten them.

Would be pleased if PF did decent in Final Qualifying…he puts himself through it and suffers - showing me how difficult it is for even pretty darn good pros to do well in comps. And so shows what a bleedin’ tough game golf is - and that that applies at all levels of the game. Success can be very hard to come by - especially if you set your success criteria way beyond your ability.

We had our Open 36 hole comp on Sunday - good quality field with many v low SF and + handicappers. Course in great condition and rough not too penal…but it was very windy. The winner somehow posted -7 over the two rounds - he won by TEN shots. Only he coped…the rest of the field of 60 struggled with many mid-80s, even a couple of low 90s, posted.

Yeah me too. As posted above, one guy failed to break 100, plenty towards the bottom of the leaderboard playing bogey golf.

I know it's possible for even the best players to have a complete mare, but I suspect some of the people who enter aren't at the level claimed in their application form.

Another poor guy shot 104 at Hesketh! +2 leading at the moment - I'm guessing it's pretty windy there.

Just had a look - gusting up to 39mph in Southport atm.
Only 5mins walk from mine. Went for a wander to see how things were shaping up. Very windy yesterday was a real struggle for everyone

I saw someone shot at 90 at Enville and thought he must be rubbish...casually forgetting I haven't broken 90 for months.

I thought they made it tougher to enter ? I know it's tough , but 104 🧐🧐 not sure he should be out there

I know someone who played at Lindrick. I was thinking the same but the. He came in 13 over and he’s a solid plus handicapper who shot 3 under on the Saturday at his course. Sometimes it’s just not your day I guess

Just had a look through the draw for the final qualifying rounds. A lot of tour pros, including winners such as Westwood, Poulter, McDowell etc. have joined making it even less likely that many of the regional qualifiers will make it though to the Open in my opinion.

No different to any other year I would have thought.

What's the specific ruling that allows them to skip the first qualifying round?

Not going to lie, I think Finchy might be better than Graeme McDowell now. Just putting that out there.

Can't help with specifics, but it is something to do with a number of "qualifying points" accumulated over the last year at designated "qualifying events" gives them automatic selection to that next level of qualifying round.

The final qualifying is for touring pros etc who have gained a level of points to go straight into final qualifying

Regional is for your club pros , am’s , those that don’t have a tour card etc

Cheers. I thought that, but I also read yesterday that Jamie Donaldson still had to do the first qualifying round, so I wasn't sure. Guess he hasn't been playing at the top for a while though.
