The Masters 2026

There's some right nonsense talked about wine.

I used to work at EADS/Airbus in France. The big-wigs used to try and out-do each other with the wine they put on the table at management dinners. I hate to think about some of the stuff I drank without really knowing what it cost.

One of my team came from a wine producing family in the Loire Valley. His mantra was always, "if you like it, drink it, sod the label!"

Good advice.

I wasn’t even being flippant with my previous comment of I’d rather have a Pepsi max. Wine could cost £5 or £5000, it would still take like crap to me and would rather drink puddle water.

I couldn’t tell the difference between Sarsons Vinegar or a Vintage wine that’s meant to be the best in the world

If my only option is wine even at a toast /wedding I’d request a soft drink and give cheers with that. It’s one of those drinks I’m not convinced people do actually like but they say that they do for status when it comes to expensive varieties 😂.

Fortunately for me my family and friends know buying wine for me would be a waste.
Yep, I've never drank wine. Don't even like champagne very much, so when I have to do a toast I take a sip and give the rest to the missus. I've mentioned elsewhere that I don't drink at all anymore, but if I did feel like I had to (on a stag do or something) I would probably just drink spiced rum and coke now. Used to drink the odd lager (but only about 4 pints then I wouldn't want anymore) or cider, but I'd always want to get onto the rum and cokes.

Anyway, the Masters... 😄

Just saw this one posted online:

Fair play for the Englishness, but cottage pie before a roast sounds very filling to me! And that's a crap desert choice to be honest.

To be fair, top quality prime rib roast beef is delicious and miles away from what you would get at a Wetherspoons or any random pub.
True but at Weatherspoons it only costs about £6.00 and includes a pint 🍺.

Let’s be honest the ingredients are going to be top notch, or at least you would hope it was.

A lot of wine is shipped to the UK in a massive bag in a shipping container. It then has flavours added to differentiate it, and it is bottled and sent out to the shops - but it's basically the same base wine when it arrives in the country.

As for lager, there are some excellent ones now - but I would never consider buying Carlsberg, Carling etc.. Rank.

There’s a Belgian bar near us, San Pedro’s, with 76 different beers. Think there’s about 6-8 of them on draught. Their Stella is fantastic. I’ve not tried the vast majority of them but I’m getting to know the types I like/dislike.

Great menu too, although I find salad with stew a bit odd.

This is exactly why I have decided not even to attempt to win or even be invited to play in The Masters (just in case I win by mistake).

Admittedly the money would be nice and being an honorary member there wouldn't be bad at all, but having to be forced to eat someone else's choice of food every year? Not for me.

Whilst I think about it, green isn't my colour and I'm not a fan of blazers.

The best available from supermarkets are the properly imported ones. Pilsner Urquell and the German ones are often where you'll find that. Many of the so called European beers are brewed in Nottingham.

Agreed, wine world is crazy. Still like a glass of the same £10 bottle stuff, wouldn’t thank you for some that’ll be 10,20,100x the price

I came here expecting a discussion about the upcoming golf tournament known as The Masters.

I leave disillusioned.
Okay, maybe we can turn the tide. My group had a betting pool, so far we've picked:

Fitz outright
Rose e/w
Koepka e/w
Hatton e/w
Fleetwood e/w

Two bets left...
