Smiffy stands on the first tee, addresses the ball, swings elegantly back (I know, stay with me ), swings violently at the ball and misses it completely.
In his rage, he swings back down towards the ball, hits it and sends it flying behind him about 10 yards through a fence and out of bounds.

Question

Where does he play his next shot from and how many strokes has he taken ?

Disclaimer... It doesn't have to be Smiffy, any duffer would do :)

I would assume that as it was an unintended strike of the ball, it could be replaced without penalty, but that said it would depend if you class the raging backwards downswing as part of the initial intended stroke.

In this example i would pull up my iphone, and hit the R&A rules explorer.

What i will note is smiffy must have connected with one of he's best strikes if the fence is 10 yards away and he cleared it :D

Reload on the tee as ball is ob. One shot for the initial swing, one penalty for hitting the ball with his equipment whilst not making a stroke, and thus playing 3 off the tee (ball replaced after accidental movement). No penalty for being ob.

Next shot is third shot.

But, his next shot should really be some time next weekend after being thrown off the course for being a knob.

Or is it a double strike as can happen in some chips where the ball goes up in the air and the club head hits it again on the way through. If that were so it would be one for the air shot and two for the second hit, then he’s out of bounds so it would be drop three, play four... from where.. nearest point of relief from the OOB I guess.

I don’t have a clue so it would be funny if I am close.

I guess its not a double hit as the swing has finished and another started but that still puts me at the same count. One air, two backwards, drop three, play four.

If you're OOB its always stroke and distance penalty , no nearest point of relief option is available

I would say that he will be penalised for the air shot, but replaces the ball back on the tee as the OOB's behind him is not relevant to the hole he is playing? ie the 'in play' is forward from the tee and cannot be behind?
