me and a work colleague are going for a round on weds & thursday next week, looking online for cheap (ish) tee times and these 3 look like a decent bet

anyone played these or recommend any other options around Herts/Beds

cheers in advance

I haven't swung a club in anger for about 4 weeks, irons are doing ok, just the dodgy git swinging them. About to embark on some s&t, range 1st thing then off for a round on my jack & same again Sunday

Got to love having a week off and the forecast is looking ok :)

Bizarrely, given that I live in Edinburgh, I've played all three of those courses in the last 16 months!! My cousin lives in Hertford and my mate and I go down there every September for a golfing weekend. Played Manor of Groves and Whitehills in September '10 and The Hertfordshire last year. Of the three, I'd strongly recommend Manor of Groves - lovely course, very friendly people and good lunch too! Whitehills is pretty good too, but it's a bit of a trek up hill and down dale. The Hertfordshire seemed to me like the kind of course that you'd play on a society outing. Took us just over five hours for a round and there are some really weird holes on it. I did manage the ace the 6th though!!
Another one worth a look would be Nazeing - played that last year too and I thought it was the best of the bunch.

Whitehills is a tough track especially if its windy...I was vice captain there in 2003 before I changed jobs and had to leave before my year as captain....

Manor of Groves also nice....

Give the London Golf & Country club a try...nice and cheap and they have an amazing Japanese Spa pool to relax in after the game...it's in Essendon just off the A414 towards Hertford.

Friend of mine is a member there. I played the new course with him and it was a decent track, not sure if the old course is members only.

Haven't played manor of groves.

Hertfordshire gets really busy. Front 9 is a bit bland but the closing 6 holes are great.

Whitehills I've played a lot. Really nice course, as has been said it's a tough test when the wind is up. Few holes on the back 9 can get a bit boggy if it's been raining.

London Hatfield is currently one of my local favourites. I've played the old course quite a bit over the past couple of months and almost had the course to myself on many occasions as most people play the new course. Really lovely course, lovely surroundings. Plays a lot longer than it's yardage as there are a lot of uphill teeshots !!!

Letchworth is another good local track. Quite a tough course. if you play Monday I think it's cheap day and it's turn up and play, no booking needed.

I would recommend my place, Chesfield Downs, but to be quite honest it just gets overbooked and you could be in for a long round, again depending on when you play.

Of the 3 named Manor of Groves would be my preference, Hertfordshire bottom of the list. Wow Essendon, thats a blast from the past :)

Not sure how far you want to travel, you'd be welcome at Aylesbury Vale on the thursday if you wanted

yeah will deffo join you at Aylesbury Vale sometime fundy as not too far a drive from me.

decisions, decisions.

My mate is a member at Chesfield Westy hence looking outside St'evenage.

The New course is members only I believe Richard as no online booking available for it. 2 ball = £20 each at Hatfield one, might be a winner and probably Manor of Groves for Thursday :)

I think Old Fold Manor in Barnet is playable on a Monday, very good course.
Essendon (both courses are good) ++ the japanese bath after is great.
Personally I didnt like Manor of Groves, no real reason just didnt
Hertfordshire, not played but no good reports
Whitehills, not played but heard its improved no end.

check the weather forecast, as whitehills really catches any wind going to the extent that it can be unplayable. Having said that, always plays off proper tees and except in hard frosts pretty much always on proper greens. I play there a lot, and as a winter course it's pretty good. Drains OK except for a few places. Though it might be fairer to say that the water runs off it, rather than drains away...

Might also be worth checking brickenden grange, as they have some winter deals. Similar to essenden and not far away - nice parkland course, and like Essenden, likely to be a bit more sheltered than whitehills if the weather is windy. Not sure how they drain though - some courses in North London/South Herts get very boggy in winter.

Another vote for the essenden plunge pool. Quite the most bizarre post golf experience I've had for a while...
