The Halfway Hut - An oasis or an unwelcome distraction?

God I hope you won.

Yeah beat him on the last - it was one of the only games I really took seriously and concentrated - he was off 1 both at 1 over and he messed up the last. Didn't stay around for a drink - told his captain what he was like and it all stems from his dad - shame as think he is going to be ruined and he could hit a great ball

Interesting discussion in the preceding pages.

Interesting too that many clubs seem to have an option to stop or not. We are a long-established traditional club where stopping for 10 minutes is part of the fabric of a round, so almost without exception everyone does so.

The point of my OP was that in some circumstances if you're going well then stopping for ten minuets is probably something you wouldn't want to do. However it makes just one more mental hazard that must be overcome.

Although I have to say that reading through here it seems that we, as a club, are in the minority.

Would have had a bet that he would have been the one with the worst score in the group

Have played with a few people who don't wish to get involved in the on course chat and banter in fear of it distracting their concentration ?! Only to watch them scratch it around nowhere near HC - you only have to look at the way the pros chat to each other as they are walking around

Played in a scratch match against 15 year old kid who informed me that he would only be talking to his caddy ( his dad ) during the round as he helps him focus !!!

It's a social game and some don't realise that
Spot on 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Well played. Must have been a right uncomfortable few hours.

I just mumbled to myself about my shots - even at times did it a little bit loud , sang to myself as well :D - said hello to others on the course very loudly etc - kept myself amused. Couple of proper first pumps at times :D

You didn't answer the question, if you and 2 of your PP's were going like a train and THEY wanted to stop, would you support them or insist on getting your own way?

To be honest at my club it's a mute point anyway as we don't have one. To be honest I would certainly be asking the question about wehter we could play on, certainly if I was going well. If a PP is playing well and wants to stop, then if I wasn't playing great it's up to him. Hard to insist on getting your own way if they decide to stop anyway. Can hardly carry on and mark my own card can I. If it had a detrimental effect on my game on the back nine I wouldn't be happy and yes, I probably would mention it. I enter comps to play my best and get a cut. Happy to be conversant and encouraging as we go round but ultimately I'm there to play golf. That's just the way I am.

As it goes, most of the halfway huts I've used, Camberley in baking conditions so a cold drink was a godsend, Sunningdale because I wanted to see if the sausage baps were as good as rumoured (they were), West Hill at H4H because that was a fun day and the scores weren't the primary concern, Blackmoor (H4H) the same. Even in the Race for Hilside this year when I was going great, it turned out that there was a gap ahead and behind and the others only wanted a soft drink so were minutes and it made no difference (I nailed a fade around the corner!!!!!!!!!!!!!) but I would have asked the question had we loitered for a while

I'm a little surprised at how people are able to get so into their flow 'zone' for a game of golf and also how easy it is for them to lapse out of it for a 5 minute hold up and then to be unable to get back into it again, something to be worked on I think

I imagine folk putting themselves into a trance like state on the 1st tee only to be unexpectedly woken out of it when they hear someone in the group ordering a bacon butty ;)

It's probably like the HNSP - it is something that you have grown up with throughout your golfing life or another golfing 'secret' that has just been let out of the bag.

I have to say that my current course is really missing out on some income here. We have a hut near the 1st/10th/19th tees but it is only used on captains day and a couple of other events. The club feel that opening it would detract from the takings in the clubhouse. The problem is that clubhouse kitchens do not open until 10.00 and so anyone who has not had breakfast before heading for the course and likes to tee off early could really do with a bite to eat at halfway. Sadly nothing is available. The argument is that I could have something when I get in but I tend to meet my wife for lunch after golf and so have a drink and head off. On that basis the club loses income.

At my new course, Pike Hills, we have an unmanned halfway house that gets stocked up with drinks, pork pies, sandwiches, chocolate etc and then you pay using an honesty jar.

Just had an email out this past week saying that the honesty jar is being abused and has been down around £30 a few times recently. Very annoying because it's a handy system.

£30 that's a lot of chocolate! it wont be an honesty jar long at that rate.
