Commentators clearly said it was a 4G pitch so unless they’ve got their info wrong I have no reason not to believe them

I worked on them for over 10 yrs and to my knowledge they are not sanctioned by FIFA / FA for competition play yet.
You can have them for training etc
Having said that I havnt worked on them lately and some form of hybrid could have been sorted as AW says.
There was talk of a hybrid with grass 60/40 but that didn’t look like it yesterday.

It appears both are true, below is an exert from a rather long answer found on google about whilst not sanctioned at League level why Macclesfield are allowed to have it. It’s a nonsense answer but basically they do have a 4G pitch whilst not sanctioned are allowed to use it
4G artificial pitches are not officially sanctioned by the FA or other major football governing bodies because they lack formal classification and long-term testing compared to 3G pitches. Macclesfield FC's situation is related to the use of artificial pitches generally, which are permitted in the lower tiers they compete in, not a special exception for "4G" itself.

What sort of rule is that.
It’s probably as AW says they have done something to it to bring it into spec.
3G pitches have a rubber crumb layer for protection of the players they might have done this making it a hybrid.
That’s a bit strange as it’s not designed for this.
But FIFA / FA having rules then allowing exceptions is nothing to be suprized about.

More so that commentators as well, as commentators actually are speaking professionally, so often have done some background research
