I’m a bit late to this, a bit like the tackle, but after reading that Isak had had an operation for the break I’ve watched the tackle.
The defender makes an effort to block the shot, the fact he’s late with the block is immaterial. Nothing wrong with that. However, his trailing leg is what causes the issue. I’m reluctant to call it a scissor tackle in the true sense of the term but it’s damn close, arguably close to that. If the trailing leg had stayed trailing, maybe Isak would have just been clattered. But we’re not talking about maybe’s. The trailing leg came forward and formed the second ‘blade’ of the scissor.

I’m uncomfortable with my interpretation but, equally, there isn’t a classic definition of a scissor tackle. However, scissoring is recognised as very dangerous.

Short version; block attempted, and missed. Trailing leg comes through causing serious injury. If it was the leading leg, straight red. Why not the same for the trailing leg? The player making the tackle is responsible for the consequences.

I genuinely don’t feel competent enough to make a value judgement but to my unskilled eye it’s a red. Whatever, that sort of tackle, action with the trailing leg has to be taken out of the game… Harvey Elliot springs to mind…
I thought exactly that at first.
But he has to make an attempt to get the ball but he’s slightly behind Isak.

I’m 50/50 on it but in the CB camp so it’s just unlucky.

In fairness, most footballers whine constantly. But, because Bruno is Utd's best player, captain, is involved in nearly every decent move and plays virtually every game, he gets seen doing it a lot. Also very visible as he is the type who is very enthusiastic with arm movement.

I'm not sure he gets booked for dissent much? If he was as bad as people said, he'd probably be booked in the first 20 minutes of every game :)
He entitled to as captain.

But it’s the stonewall fouls that he still moans about that annoys imo.

Even when the refs given the foul for or against.

Great player in between moaning.😉

I would class his challenge as a scissor challenge. I think if we were to picture the type of scissor challenge that is outlawed, that would not be it.

His trailing leg was in a normal position, and probability wise, safest position. If he tried to keep his legs together, that would be your classic 2 footed challenge, and becomes much more dangerous probability wise.

Well he broke his leg so it was dangerous.

The only thing for me is Isak scored!
If that challenge was outside the box what’s the punishment as VdV didn’t get any of the ball.

The Bentanchur challenge was the worst of the whole game imo.

Any challenge can be dangerous, based on bad luck.

This is a very good angle. It shows he doesn't come though Isak. Its an honest last ditch attempt to block the shot. One he has to make. Isak gets the shot off and his follow through hes caught inbetween the defenders leg. Its a tangle and the both hit the deck.
He doesn't scissor him but his back legs does come round once they get tangled.
It all happens at speed. A defender has to make that challenge every time to try and block the shot. Its last ditch stuff.
In the middle of the park you get a booking for arriving a fraction late. In the box its never the case when the forward gets his shot off.
Isak got really unlucky this time. Its a shame for the lad really.

Spot on, genuine attempt to get the ball, none of this scissor rubbish.

Hopefully Isak will recover quickly, shocking injury for any player.

I'd not seen it until the above link and thought I'd give in and see what all the fuss was about. The injury was to his ankle and the fracture his fibula. To me that happened as his foot gets trapped under the defender's thigh. I don't even see a foul, let alone a dangerous scissor tackle. Tough break (!) but sadly that happens.

It’s definitely a foul ( if outside the box etc ) because he hasn’t got any of the ball and took the man

No it’s not, the Ref could decide it was a coming together after a genuine attempt to play the ball.

Isak scored so why would he blow for a foul - the only decision to make was if it was a red card offence

Doesn’t matter if it’s a genuine attempt- if you don’t get the ball and get the man instead then it’s at the very least a foul

No, you’re wrong,

Are you really saying you’ve never seen two players go in for a tackle and the Ref waves play on.

Not every tackle is a foul if you don’t win the ball.

Yes I have seen the ref play on if there is an advantage

That wasn’t two players going in for a tackle- that was a player trying to block a shot and not getting the ball and taking the man out

But if you go in for a tackle and don’t get the ball and get the man then it’s a foul - that’s just basic football

I guess by your logic then the ref was right not to give Everton a penalty because Saliba made a genuine attempt at the ball ?
