Declan Rice has been such a good signing. Not only a world class player but a real leader and positive influence in the dressing room. You know he's been good when no one mentions his transfer fee at all.
I've heard Rice get some quite harsh criticism over the last year or two. I've never really understood it. He is a quality player, he is consistent, he gives it 100% all the time and he seems to be a pretty decent guy. He is like the midfield version of a Harry Kane. Great footballer, reliable, and someone that his team mates will look up to, especially at it must be impossible to fall out with him.

I’d have loved to have had him at United. Top player.

That was the player Utd needed more than anything. Well him and Kane. Sign those two for £200m a few years back and you get world class players for 5 years and people who run the dressing room. I know it sounds simple but you've spent double that on a lot worse players in the meantime.

So what is our entertainment tonight?

Villa should comfortably dispatch Young Boys
Feyenoord v Celtic is a real 6 pointer
Forest v Malmo has a little bit of historic significance but you'd expect a home win
But the real fun in the EL could be at Ibrox where Rangers take on Sporting Braga.

Lets hope the Palace fans who visit Strasbourg for their ECL match have a friendlier welcome from the authorities/police than the Newcastle fans did after the game in Marseilles.

Think I'll start with Villa as a warm up and then watch the Palace game later.

Actually....just realised the U17 WC final is on at 4pm....Austria, who were very impressive when they thumped England 4-0 a couple of rounds ago, are up against Portugal.....might tune in for that.

One of my biggest frustrations with Utd's shambles of a transfer policy.

It was clear the likes of Rice and Kane were going to leave. Utd should have worked hard to fight for those transfers (I'd personally add Grealish to that chat, when he was going to leave Villa). Sure, maybe they'd never have happened. Maybe the players would have preferred to go elsewhere. But at least as a club, Utd should have well and truly put themsleves in that conversation, and shown they were willing to fight for their signature.

Instead, it felt like the people in charge of Utd's transfers didn't have the confidence to fight for high demand players, and so took the easy option and threw silly money at players where no other club in their right might would match, and where the players club would happily accept the offer without any sort of fight.

Looking at 22/23 and 23/24, Man Utd spent 311.15 million Euro on Antony, Casemiro, Mount and Hojlund. Had Utd planned to bid for Kane and Rice, they wouldn't have really needed those 4 players, and would have had change left over most likely (perhaps they could have still bought one of those 4 along with Kane and Rice). Plus, Ugarte may not have been a necessary buy if Rice had come, nor Zirkzee with Kane there. There is nearly another 100 million Euro saved. Players like Kane and Rice are also the types of players than are very good at lifting the performance of players around them I suspect.

Wow....U-17 WC final...a really tight offside call is done and dusted via video review in around 30 seconds.

Ref went to pitchside monitor, watched the replay 3 times (no lines or anything) and made his judgement.

This is the way forward....no anonymous bloke sat in a shack at Stockley Pk to confuse matters....let the ref make his decisions and if review is needed let him alone make it. I reckon that would have taken three or four minutes to sort with the PL implementation of VAR.

I thought Rice was a bit overrated, but this season I’ll admit I was wrong.

Maybe it was the muller rice adverts he did 🤷‍♂️😆

Feyenoord have an end closed tonight by UEFA as punishment for letting fireworks off in the ground in their last game.

They score tonight, and a load of fireworks are fired onto the pitch from outside the ground!

Madness.
