As I said last season - Ugarte was shipped out quickly from PSG for a reason- he is slow in every respect

And the backline are so far wide open it’s too easy

The formation and tactics do now suit the players they have

To be fair to Ugarte this system is just wrong for him. He is nowhere near mobile enough to be one of a midfield pair. He’s a decent player in the right system, but this just isn’t it.

And as Lucifer says, this system doesn’t suit Fernandes either. I still think the system could work, but not with these players. Some will maintain Hojlund is rubbish. I still say he was a decent player being let down by the system.

This was never going to be fixed in one window but buying a new front three certainly wasn’t going to put things right. We can all see where the problem is.

Today just goes to show how very, very average we are which is compounded by fact that our midfield is non existent. Spending that amount of money on our front line but not addressing the midfield was ludicrous and will come back to haunt us repeatedly during the season.

I don’t think City were actually that good today, they didn’t need to be.

How do you think this was missed in recruitment this summer? I'm not being sarky, I think most people could see the problem last season. For it to be glossed over and all the eggs going in the attacking basket, odd decision.

To be fair, most of us knew the front three weren’t the problem. That central midfield is awful, both defensively and creatively. Has been for too long, but in this system it’s a massive issue.
It’s your final ball that’s the problem imo ,today anyway.

Thought you played quite well second half but the final ball is abysmal.

In addition the Amorim experiment isn’t working. I know you can’t keep sacking managers and expecting different outcomes but his insistence to stick with a system when it’s clearly not working mid game is the stuff of Sunday league football. Oppositions are walking through our midfield and will continue to do so for the remainder of the season. We’re looking like a team who will be lucky to get top 12.

Genuine question to Utd fans! Where is your midfield.
As I see it, and I'm no expert by any stretch.
The problem is that we have no midfield No.6;
Ugarte - not good enough.
Casemiro - no legs.
Bruno - wrong position, he's a No.10.
Kobbie - wrong position, he's a No.8.
We must get an elite No.6, someone like Wharton or Baleba, and play them with a No.8, Kobbie.
I also think it may be time to cash in on Bruno, although he'll always be fondly remembered.

I don’t necessarily think it was. I just think there is that much work to do that, as I say, one window could not get it done.

I do think we now have a far more dynamic front three. But no team can complete a total overhaul in one window. But I am slightly surprised we didn’t go for two new forwards and address that central midfield. A good window in many respects, but an unbalanced one if viewing things holistically.

Great post. And now we have the front three the manager wanted, I agree regarding Fernandes. If he cannot be shoehorned into a system Amorim longs to play, cash in and get the players who fit.

Agree, you can’t do everything in one window but equally you need to try and improved different areas within the same window rather than chucking £200m at the forward line and leaving other areas of the pitch until the next window.

It all comes back to the same question

Why doesn’t Amorin adjust his formation and tactics to suit the players he has until he gets in the players that can play the way he wants

By continuing to put lots of square pegs in round holes the defeats will keep happening and he won’t get the time to bring in more people

There are players there that can play in a 4–3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 type formation

If he doesn’t make adjustments he will be gone soon enough

From what I saw, City that were not at there strongest, beat a Utd team that were not far off there strongest.

The similarities between both teams are that they are both building. Utd want to get to Citys level. City want to get to Liverpools level.

Could be a long season for both teams re expectations.

Again, totally agree. I’m not even sure a new keeper was a priority ahead of sorting the central midfield pairing.

A great start to the window, which I suspect may have been hampered by it taking so long to resolve the outgoings. But that was always likely to be problematic.

I think some may derive more pleasure from United losing than they do from their team winning!
Very strange, even obsessional?

It’s always enjoyable watching Man Utd lose

Maybe take heart that if Man Utd were a smaller club people wouldn’t be talking about them

But it’s always worth remember that for 2 decades Man Utd fans enjoyed their success and lorded above many others - so when they do struggle people will talk about it

More conversations happen about big clubs when they struggle , it would be no different when Liverpool have struggled

Man Utd are one of the biggest clubs in the world - they will always be a talking point
