Think Delap is a very good player and his potential is high

For his release clause I would jump at signing him

United cannot keep signing players with potential, same as they can’t keep going after those towards the end of their careers. We’ve been doing both for a decade and look at the mess.

We need proven players in their mid-20’s, who still have their best days ahead.

Hojlund was always crap mate. He had a run of about 5-6 games where he looked decent but for the vast majority of the season he was poor. This season he's just proved it further.

Delap is a much better player and has looked a real handful and made things happen on his own up top in a terrible side. It's an insult to be compared to Hojlund of even last season. If Utd have missed out on him at £30m it's a disaster.
Another brilliant over exaggeration.

It isn't a disaster if a player wishes to join another club. It is inevitable

The issue is that to get those players who are proven is either going to cost a lot of money that United don’t have and a good number will be looking at CL clubs

Delap will score a lot more than Hojlund and Zirkzee

He will get some team next season over 20 goals

He may well do. But if he wants to be at Chelsea, and they want him, then there isn't much else any other club can do.

It is always hard to get experienced, quality players. They are expensive, usually not available anyway, and if they are might prefer somewhere else. Even when Utd were at their best, many top players preferred to play elsewhere, same with all clubs.

However, it appears Utd have managed to get Cunha, who fits more the profile Billy is talking about. So, getting such players isn't impossible.

As far as strikers are concerned, I guess that is a tough position these days for many clubs to fill.

When will people realise, Zirkzee IS NOT a striker.

I’m referring to both player’s respective first full Premier League seasons - ie this season for Delap, last season for Hojlund.

Hojlund last season looked a far better player in my view than Delap has looked this. But the United man has shown very clearly that it is unwise to judge a player on their first full season.

Buying another largely unproven striker is not the path I really want to see United going down.
There is so much wrong in your Assessment of Delap v Hojlund. Esp when you compare first seasons. The first season of Hojlund, he played in a team far superior to this season. And was still bang average at best. Delap in a team where he stood out did far better. What could he do in a decent team, and yet still Utd are interested. Utd paid a fortune for Hojlund that materialised into nothing. But and this is not a dig at Holland. He is not the first player Utd have bought that has been over priced.

Hojlund was not a £60 million signing with potential. He allegedly came with pedigree..

Then again, maybe Hojlund would score more goals if he played in a side who were extremely focused on relying on him to score the goals, and doing their best to pass to him.

And maybe Delap would struggle playing in a side of primadonas like Rashford and Garnacho, that look to do everything themselves.

It is impossible to compare them either way. Delap could have come to Utd (if he wanted to) and been a sensation. Maybe he will be at Chelsea. But there is the chance he might have struggled, when he realises the media analyse his performance nearly every hour of every day between games, and rip him to shreds when he goes through a quiet spell.

Basically, it is quite tricky to be sure a young player is the real deal after one season in the PL for a side that got relegated

My analogy was based upon others that compared Hojlund to Delap. Personally I thought it unfair, but for £30 million, Delap is well worth a punt. For me the important point being missed is this. Amorim is wanting to spend this transfer window building his team. Delap was part of this team building. The centre forward he had at Sporting Lisbon was Gykores who hardly set the world on fire at Coventry and Swansea yet became world class at Sporting Lisbon who paid €20 million for him. Delap. Ould of been the next Gykores. City have a saying “ in Pep we trust”. The Utd fans need to have the same faith in Amorin. Whoever he goes for.

Utd fans, in general, seem to have a lot of faith in Amorim. If Delap came, we'd have had faith. But, he wanted to go to Chelsea, end of that pursuit of it ever started.

The Hojlund comparison was only done to look at both players inexperience. Inexperience in our squad has been a huge hindrance. No one is saying Hojlund in better or even at same level as Delap, just that there are big unknowns

I watched Hojlund first hand any number of times last season, and he looked more than handy. It’s beginning to wear very thin being told, as a match going fan, that my eyes have been deceiving me for two years. They haven’t.

With respect, too many here are happy to comment based on what they read in the papers and see on MOTD. He’s had a bad year in a team which has been stinking the Premier League out for several years. I’m not about to sit here and say he hasn’t gone backwards, quite badly. He has.

But Liam Delap is suddenly being touted as the next big thing. Not because he is, but because United have missed out on his signature. In short, it’s being used as yet another stick to beat us with. I say again, in the event he signs for Chelsea it’s not something I’m going to lose a moment of sleep over.

Give me Cunha any day. And in the event they manage to sign a player like Mbeumo, that would be a far bigger coup for United than a player like Delap, who is still very much an unknown quantity.
