Well, that was an ugly three points.
United should have won that game 8-4, it should have been over by half time.
Credit to Luton, they never gave up ........................ I hope they're around next season.

Luton at home can give anyone a game imo, tight ground suits there play plus their fans create a good atmosphere.

On your other post about the yellow the refs seem to forget it's a contact sport. Just why contact in the box doesn't always = a pen and if not pen given doesn't always mean it's a dive

So, something I was wondering….

The axe fell on Paul Heckingbottom in December with Blades in a poor position in the league. It came after several weeks of pundits and “experts” speculating on how long he would survive.

Last season, my own team Forest had a poor start. And every week a pundit or expert was be wondering when Cooper would get the chop. It only stopped when the owner did the opposite of what everybody expected and gave him a new contract.

Futures of other managers have been subject to speculation this season eg Chelsea, Man U.

Currently, Vincent Kompany’s Burnley are joint bottom of the league, only one place higher than Blades because they have a slightly less appalling goal difference. If they aren’t already, they are very much in danger of being cut adrift.

Yet I genuinely haven’t seen or heard any pundits clamouring for him to be sacked. Not a single expert seems to question his ability to carry on in his job. He seems to be completely flying under the radar of speculation on his future.

Anyone know why…? 🤔

Don't know - but it rather sounds like you're trying start the said speculation?? :):)

Two reasons that I see.

1. He has them playing a more progressive style of football and both owners and fans are willing to accept a bit of a yo-yo between Premier League and Championship while he embeds that culture.

2. He has friends in the media who have openly said they won’t call for their friend to be sacked.

They play some really good stuff, look very well coached and are only missing a striker. If they could finish better they'd be around 12th.

Do they? Every time I've seen them, they are woeful. Granted, I probably haven't watched many games in full.

They play good stuff and only missing a striker? They've conceded 55 goals. I think they are missing a bit more than a striker.

Yes they do.

How many have they scored?

I‘d guess it’s because he was/is a bit of a hero & cult figure at City, a bit like when Shearer took over at Newcastle. The media, and some of the fans, will eventually go after him but at present he still has star dust on his shoes.

25. But I never disagreed about them not scoring. I was simply saying they look awful in both attack and defence, and they need more than a striker. Or at least a better manager who is capable of getting results while they build the side for a few years.

Although Burnley were a real boring team last time in PL. They then go to Championship and play like Messi's Barcelona. So I wouldn't be surprised if many Burnley fans would be content with getting relegated, and then watch better football at a lower level.

Their style of play is more aligned to a top half team than a bottom half team. It will take time to perfect it and theyll need to improve the squad as they go. Some of the games this season have been close where they have lacked that quality upfront to change a draw into a win and a defeat into a draw. Thankfully they have evolved from the Dyche dogged defensive style that they were renowned for.

It is almost impossible to play the style they do and get results without quality in key areas. Its usually 1 or the other. Remember how some of the bigger teams suffered while trying to play the way they do. Kompany has only had 25 Premiership games to implement this style.

One of my team is a Burnley fan and she thinks there is more missing than a striker. It seems several players are regularly out of position and by all accounts the fan base is becoming more divisive on Kompany

I'd wondered if at least part of the reason was something along these lines.

Will be interesting to see how long his Golden Boy status lasts (assuming he can't turn things around).

I think he will and should be allowed to stay in post if they’re relegated. Three teams must be relegated each year. This would happen even if the twenty best managers and teams started the season in the division.

I think a difference with Cooper was that he never seemed to try to instil a more progressive and modern way of thinking into a team who were previously seen as old fashioned and lacking. Not saying that’s true or not, I don’t know enough about Forest, but it’s certainly the perception I’ve observed from the media.

Nice to see Hojlund is starting to get the goals, and pundits and the like will be less likely to label him a flop this season. Always felt it was a lazy label, when Man Utd fans who watch all / most of the games actually really like him, and recognized the service to him was, quite simply, horrific.

Interesting to see that the likes of Nunez and Haaland are 1st and 2nd on the list of number of shots in the PL this year (79 and 76 respectively). Hojlund is down in 74th position, with 29 shots. Even though I much prefer to see Garnacho on right, and there are signs that he will look to provide more assists to the front man, Hojlund it still not getting much service at all. Of the run he is on at the moment, he has only had 3 assists. One of them was a shanked shot from Garnacho (yesterday) that he chested in. Another was a great interception by Casemiro, although Hojlund still had a lot of work to do. And the other was a good ball in by Shaw, and Hojlund had to make a really good Gary Lineker type run and bundle it into the net under pressure.

I would absolutely love to see Utd start playing where the wide players (and Bruno) can start playing better football, and giving Hojlund some great chances to score. But, what I love about Hojlund is his all round game. Even after his early goals yesterday, he really put in a shift. He can take the ball under pressure, back to goal, and he is incredibly unselfish. He has recently shown that he may have a natural instinct at finding spaces in the box (possibly due to having to feed off scraps in his early days, it was his only option). But I think he looks to have a really good all round game. Just need to see some great crosses into the box, to see if he can become a good aerial threat as well.

Also nice to see some of the pundits starting to recognize Mainoo now, with some calling for him to be in the England squad. They keep talking about the fact that Mainoo could play for Ghana, but I doubt there is much danger of that unless he has a real passion for Ghana. Even if he isn't called up for England soon, I'm pretty sure he will be confident enough that it is only a matter of time. He was brilliant again yesterday, his composure in possession is something I haven't seen in the Utd team since as far back as maybe Scholes. And he always seems to play exactly the right pass, and just seems to effortlessly help build up the momentum of the attack. He isn't like Bruno, who is always trying to play Hollywood balls, he just seems to have a natural intelligence as to what the best ball is at any moment, and when to release it.

Rashford always frustrates, and there was a moment yesterday when I sighed in despair when Barkley seemed to walk at snailed pace around him, and Rashford just sort of gave up. On the flip side, I also think he did a lot of good things. There were times he showed effort to defend. He also made really dangerous runs, like the one he made when Maguire ran through the middle in front. I think Rashford did everything right, except the finish. He played a great ball to Garnacho in second half. There have been much worse Rashford performances, but yesterday I think there were some good things he did. He's just in desperate need of a bit more confidence, and constantly losing Martinez and Shaw on his side of the pitch is frustrating.

Special shout out to Jonny Evans, thought he was outstanding in second half. Sign this boy on an 8 year contract :)

It's something Norwich dealt with well for a spell. The owners know the limitations, financially, that the manager is working under, they accept they might not stay up. Is the manager entertaining the crowd, is he bringing players through, are the players on board with the manager? If the answer to these questions is yes then stick with the manager that took them down, see if they can bring them back up. Sacking is not always the answer.

Couldn’t agree more. No one has a divine right to stay in the top flight. Finishing 20th in the PL still makes you 20th out of thousands of team across the country. That’s not too shabby.
