It’s a reductive argument to conflate Henderson’s choices with PIF buying Newcastle etc. People going to Saudi for work has been going on for more years than we’ve been alive, and I grew up with it and have no problem with it. However, Henderson mouthed off about the regime - no problem with that. But he then goes over there!?! That, to me, is hypocritical.
Jill Scott won’t have earned big money, and her BBC gig is her livelihood. Would it be wise for her to risk losing her job by saying no? Knowing how women are treated by the local police I see nothing wrong with her comments. I certainly don’t see them as hypocritical.
Scott has been over to the Middle East countries on multiple private Corp events outside any commentary commitments that come with working with the BBC - it’s why imo it’s hypocritical, she was comfortable going their for paid private Corp events and didn’t feel unwelcome so it shouldn’t be any different watching Henderson play football there
I don’t know if Henderson mouthed off against the Saudi regime ? Not seen that - the issue with Henderson appears more to the fact he was very vocal about LGBQT rights etc and then went to a country where they have no rights etc
But it’s not the first time that someone will push the morals to the background when it comes to being given money
The Ladies European Tour as an example with the Saudi Events and the money from the Aramaco etc
It’s all hypocritical because people when offered money will 9/10 turn the blind eye and switch off from the criticism - maybe too cynical a view but evidence over the years has shown it happen
