Very sad news and perhaps a reminder that nothing is really new in football. £1 million pounds was seen as unbelievable in those days as much as £100 million seems so now.

£100 million isn't a lot now![]()
I read this morning it would be a 2 yr contract, with a 1 yr exit clause purely for Real Madrid to take him.Meanwhile, reports that Al Hilal have bid £259m for Mbappe![]()

Is any of this any more distasteful than the PL/Div 1 clubs paying their players through offshore accounts to avoid paying tax?The wages the Saudis are offering is crazy.
But so is what the top prem clubs have been paying their top stars for years![]()
Yes. Blood money. Is any of this any more distasteful than the PL/Div 1 clubs paying their players through offshore accounts to avoid paying tax?
None of the players see to care where it’s coming from. If, let’s say, ManU/L’pool/ManC offered YOU £700m would you say “no?” I wouldn’t. If my earning capacity dropped off at 30, could end before then with a nasty foul or might last till I was 34-ish but then just a few quid on the after dinner circuit I‘d sign for the best fee and wages my agent could squeeze. Divide the monthly wage by ALL the months up to statuary retirement age, and then decide if it’s excessive. But no I wouldn’t sign for football club based in a country with issues, not just human rights violations.
Surely, it’s not about the fee/wages but more about the where?
As is the modern tradition, Trevor Francis will get his minute of applause in the stadium where he was adored. Much more fitting than an extended obituary on the news.Very sad to hear about Trevor Francis today. I remember watching him make his debut for Forest at Exeter City in a pre season friendly, just after he became the first £1m player.
I was also slightly annoyed that his passing warranted about 30 seconds on the BBC news yet George Alagiah took up the first 10 minutes of the news at 6 pm today and then went back for another feature about his life. I get he was a colleague and a respected newsreader, who sadly passed away after a battle with cancer, but surely he didn't justify that much coverage.

Can confirm this is true.Apparently Chris Bart Williams has also.passed away, aged 49. Sad day for Sheffield Wednesday
Indeed and already we’re seeing people using their deaths to push a pseudoscientific agenda. It’s shameless. Can confirm this is true.
Absolutely heartbreaking day. First Francis and to hear about The Bartman late last night was devastating. One of my first football heroes at Forest when I was a kid.
Terrible day for Wednesday and Forest :-(
This idea they stop at 30 so have to chase the money is often said, and for a small amount who maybe fet to the peak late, Vardy, Pelle we had at saints who went to China I get it, BUT. At top level at least players will likely have a 15 year career where they could expect to earn 100k a week. That's 78m.
For the very vast majority of people that work for 50years from paper round to retirement, that would average out at like 1.5m per year.
Now I'm not for a second saying any of us would skip the 700m, I'm simply saying the notion they can only earn til 30ish so have to maximise opportunities is not really true
Assume one of those is the tinfoil hat wearing Le Tissier? It's absolutely embarrassing and pathetic.Indeed and already we’re seeing people using their deaths to push a pseudoscientific agenda. It’s shameless.
