Sensible taking Watkins off.

Lets hope Rashford can bring his club form to an England shirt.
Waste of 45 minutes. Didn't take a single player on....just 3 yard passes to Spence who, along with Gordon and Pickford when called upon, was excellent.

Call me moaning old goat, but the last 60 minutes was largely forgettable fayre....but that often happens when a team scores a few goals early on.

Hopefully the likes of Foden, Bellingham, Mount, Grealish and co will be watching and realise that they cant take their places for granted....we do look like a team with a bit more cohesion and togetherness with square pegs in appropriately shaped holes and not trying to squeeze the so called superstars into the same team.

Spot on

Tuchel didn’t hold back on his criticism of the English fans last night

It’s not often Wembley is lively. There’s been better atmosphere when England have played their home matches elsewhere.

Second half was a bit too clinical and boring. Maybe if he gave instructions to the team to be a bit more adventurous and exciting he might see more from the fans.

Surely every coach wants to play lovely exciting football?? Unless they are underdogs, and they recognise they need to defend robustly.

I can't imagine that when England go out and play teams like Wales or other sides of lower quality, they actually want to play boring, tactical football. Not with Tuchel anyway. There were plenty of times in second half that the likes of Gordon were desperately trying hard to attack and get through Wales, but the final ball or finish were lacking. They are human as well, so there will inevitably be periods in the game where they generally try and get their breath back.

Every time the camera focused on Tuchel on touchline, he seemed very invested in what was going on, and desperately seemed to want more goals. When subs came on, he was clearly trying to pump them up.

I wonder if some England fans just expect way way too much? If Engalnd are not playing sintilating, high tempo breathtaking football for 90 minutes, the moaning starts about being boring. It might be why the atmosphere for other nations is so much better. Expectations are lower for many nations, like N Ireland and Wales. Their fans therefore do not expect to be spoiled by beatiful football. Instead they just go to the games and are 100% focused on giving all their positive energy to their team, almost no matter what.

The atmosphere at Wembley has been poor for England games since day one. Occasionally you get a Saturday game that is important and the atmosphere picks up though.

The issue is the demand is so huge England will get 80,000 plus for friendlies, that's great for fans wanting to see the team but a lot are day trippers and familes who don't really sing regardless of the performance. Nothing wrong with that but combine it with a huge ground, lots of flat home games and it doesn't make for a great atmosphere.

During Euro 2020 the atmosphere was better with less fans, mainly because it was England Supporters Club members who were buying the tickets as they were a lot harder to get hold of. Nothing will change the atmosphere at Wembley going forward, nice of Tuchel to try but it won't have an impact.

Do other nations get similar poor atmospheres if they play in big stadiums (e.g. Wales?)

There are probably several reasons to explain it, but I generally find that the passion England fans express is much less than that of fans of many other nations. It could be the stadium, it good be fan expectations, etc. Not to say passionate England fans do not exist of course. And I suppose the atmosphere improves when England play home games on the road. Again, perhaps due to stadium itself. But I'd also imagine if England are making a rare appearance in another part of the country, many of the local England fans are more pumped up, and proud that the game is in their neck of the woods.

Good post 👍🏻

One answer, a comparison. Roy Keene’s comments about the prawn sandwich brigade.

When so many avid fans lose out to corporate places the atmosphere will suffer.

Having been to Wembley many times over the years it’s always disappointed. So many of the fans are filled from the corporate club Wembley seats and you can literally see them hardly watching the game as they’re to busy networking! So you’re spot on with that response.

Best Atmosphere I’ve ever experienced at an England game was years ago Vs Ukraine at St James Park, passionate local fans not a prawn sandwich eater in sight and the team was supported from the 1st to last minute with songs and pride.

Yeah, no doubt corporate fans help dilute an atmosphere. Would be interesting to know how big the impact is at international level in comparison to club level.Or how other nations, such as Wales with a big stadium, reserve seating for the prawn sandwich lovers of the game, in comparison to Wembley.

I suppose with sides like Northern Ireland and Wales, despite having many passionate fans of club sides (often in England), they also have very passionate international fans. Whereas there always seems to be a much bigger proportion of English people that almost don't care about international football, hate it when the games are on and get bored if England haven't scored in the last 10 minutes. I know a lot of English people, and I can't think of one that actually seems to enjoy it when England are playing, unless it is in a World Cup, latter stages. Well, there is one guy I know that loves it, but not so much when the men are playing, more so when the women are playing (and I believe it is for genuine football reasons before anyone gets any ideas). Whereas nearly all the football fan Northern Irish people I know absolutely love it when N Ire are playing, and I know a few that go to every single game. Not sure what it is like in Scotland and Wales, but I'm guessing it is similar.

Atmosphere is about fans, surely? And is anyone really genuinely a fan of the England team?

Wanting them to do well is great, but that’s different to being a fan isn’t it? If tuchel wants 90 minutes of songs and chants and excitement surely he’s in the wrong job.

I’d say I was a fan in the 90s- mid 2000s.
Since then I’m not really bothered tbh.
I tend to watch tournaments if I’ve nothing else on.
Most of the lads I work with (who are into football) don’t like the international breaks.
